Well, the first Castlevanias played differently. They played like a lot of other NES games like Ninja Gaiden, with the "levels" each having a player and "enemy", or boss hp bar for each level. There was nothing much in the way of RPG elements, it was just you and your whip. You really didn't equip anything. Look up "castlevania nes" or something similar to get an idea of what I'm referring to. Those came first :P
