I have a feeling that the way that Derek talks about the totalitarian nature of the alien society is a veiled comment on Soviet regime, and 50's society's fear that their freedoms could be taken in the same way (it could also be a reference to the Nazi regime aswell - this film was made only 10 years after WW2 after all)

I could, however, be reading way too much into that speech and talking total bollocks.

"Dr. Mason, Dr. Mason. Your fake beard is terrible!" One of my favorite "bad" movies. I saw it as a kid and I have a copy in my vast collection. If I owned a drive in theatre, I would play this movie all the time. The creepy music starting at 2:23 is also at the end of "Night of the LIving Dead." I hate it when Sparky the Dog is turned into bones.
