This was a week before my first cruise I was frickin scared. And the paradise is not a sister ship to the splendor. The splendor is the only one in it's class.
Maybe it was just a coincidence that on this same day a mysterious missle was launched off the coast of Ca very close to this ship. In fact you guys ABC, had Dallas Reins working the green screen doing his afternoon weather when they made the announcement. Check your archives. Rumor has it this ship was hit by a EMP Chinese sub weapon while Obama was visiting India at the time. I could go on with more proof, such as why were the power distribution generators knocked off line?
Ok, funny story.............I WAS SUPPOSED TO ON THAT SHIP THE VERY NEXT WEEK, GODDAMN IT!!!! Everyone at work, "Hey, aren't you supposed to be in Mexico?" "Yes, now shut the fuck up!"
well, in my case, id rather be stuck on a broken down ship than a plane
at least the ship still float
i think its disgusting how the media portray this event, it could have been worst, like oil tanker amoco cadiz who broke down in a heavy storm, got pushed on the shore causing the ship to break in half, spilling its entire load of oil in the ocean
Chinggop - WE NEVER ATE SPAM!!!! and the passengers, including myself have done nothing but praise the crew for their efforts. The only people with bad things to say is the media (suprise, suprise) There were a handful of people on the ship that complained, but lets face it, even in an ideal situation...some people would still complain.
@wyfan123451 very well said!!! I agree there are people that would complain about a wonderful cruise!! Carnival did the best they could within their power!! I have never seen these ports and this was my 9th cruise..that was a bummer but I will eventually make it back to do the Mexican Riviera cruise! On the bright side: We had a wonderful meal sunday night!! We could have ended up on life boats so this was a good turn out to something that could have been a disaster!!
@wyfan123451 I would have to say the scariest part was when they told us we were going to be tugged to Ensenada, Mexico and be bused across the border..YIKES!!! Not once was was I scared on the ship!! There was no SPAM served..(maybe the crew members got spam??) My flight home from Minneapolis (the connecting flight) to Des. Moines was so much scarier than the ship!! The pilot comes on and says the weather in Des. Moines is not favorable...Not what you want to hear on a plane!CRUISE CARNIVAL
Alpha Team did a really good job on the Splendor and so did the rest of the crew, all those early morning drills paid up.
I'm sure half of those guests will not cruise with Carnival again, people get pissed of and demand outrageous things even when a ship misses a port of call because of a hurricane or something so I can only imagine what's gonna happen now.Anyway good job Carnival crew for keeping they situation under control, shit happens planes crash cars crash ...... u get the ideeea
That funny! passengers were so ungreatful with spam and poptarts brought in by the USNavy. If they only know our troops were eating MRE's in the desert. What a true ameican spirit, are these passengers american?
my opinion is this was over dramatic, the news made it seem. they were only 12 hours without their needs. no one died, at least they had food,.... and from videos ive seen, ppl were still singing, dancing, and drinking too...
it was NOT a life or death situation hahaa...
dont say you'd never go on a cruise now. that's ridiculous... this happens very rarely! cruises rock. i love the splendor, best cruise ever.
A lot of these new ships are an accident waiting to happen! They just don't build them like they used to! Believe it or not a lot was learnt from the sinking of the Titanic but sadly it all seems to be forgotten!
@coolcampervans, yeah, they definitely don't build them as they used to. For example in these days hardly any inflammable materials are allowed on board and they need to have lifeboats for everyone, not just the first class passengers. Such a shame! I really loved that wood even if it meant a fiery death for everyone onboard.
Read my response to coolcampervans. Also, modern lifeboats that you see hanging off ships hold everyone in the ship including the crew. The Splendor in particular has 24 lifeboats each holding almost 200 people which is more than enough for all the passengers and crew.
I really hope you were being sarcastic in your comment. If so, disregard everything I just said...unless you actually didn't know this stuff.
@jshaw6000, you might want to check your sarcasm radar ;-)
I really hate when ignorant people think Titanic was somehow "built better" than modern cruise ships. Because of the sinking of the Titanic we have things like International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) that imposes strict regulations to passenger ships, one being the ban of nearly any combustible materials. Had the fire happened on an old liner, they all would have quite likely died.
Lol I know. That's why I said I hope you were being sarcastic.
But yeah, ships definitely get better with the mistakes of previous ones. Next up for change might be the generators, depending on the cause of the most recent failure. Hopefully Carnival will implement this change into their Dream class ship coming out next year, the Carnival Magic. Although I doubt it will change seeing as next year is too soon to design and build a new generator.
@jshaw6000, the new Safe Return To Port (SRTP) rules that came into force this year require full redundancy of the propulsion system. A fire in one of the engine rooms shouldn't affect the other one. However, this only affects the new ships that have had their keel laid after July 1st, 2010 if I recall correctly. Old ships with "one fault and we're screwed" design can keep sailing as they were.
No you're not exactly right. Safety standards and building codes have gotten better with ships. Have you watched the discovery channel and watched how they build ships such as the QE2 or QM2? You'd be surprised the amount of fire tech that goes into them.
The reason the whole ship didn't catch on fire was because of this technology. Fire resistant materials along with compartmentalized sealed rooms allowed for the restriction of oxygen and rapid suffocation of the flames.
@jshaw6000, don't forget the modern fire suppression systems. Modern ships have CO2 and/or water mist systems while Titanic probably relied no fire hoses and buckets. I just visited the company that produces the water mist system, and it can suppress a main engine fire within seconds - they had real footage from a Royal Caribbean ship, Explorer of the Seas I believe. No-one died even though there were people next to the engine when it caught fire.
"It's terrible down here," Pfeifer read from the e-mail. "A lot of the people's toilets don't flush and are overflowing in their rooms. The first floor of the deck flooded and so crew are sleeping on the floor of upper decks."
The e-mail describes the smell of urine, rotten food and smoke on the ship. The water is dirty, many of the cabins are pitch black because of a loss of power and there is not air conditioning or heat.
If the livin' conditions are as stated Carnival should 'ave 'ad a better hammer and tack up plan. Yer always 'ave some type of redundancy built into a safety plan. But ter have blokes in cabins for free or four days wiv no lights, toilets and poor conditions will spurn the bleedin' lorwhistle and flutes.
The carnival splendor and paradise are NOT sister ships, they are just in the same fleet. poor research on the part of the reporter. the paradise was built by kvarner mesa and the splendor by fancantieri.
sorry to hear about what happened , but im sure that the crew will do their best ....worked on the splendor on my last contract which eneded on oct 10 ....im positive that tha crew will helpfull ..as they r the best on seven seas
Me too, last Sept. and I absolutely love the ship!!! I hope a safe return for everyone; I know Carnival will work hard to take care of the passengers and crew...Ms. Kris
My thoughts are....Maybe the military " DARPA" used HAARP to destory the missile be it a test for HAARP of actual enemy take down We will never know. Anyway HAARP can generate 3 billion watts of power. If the cruise ship was anywhere near this the frequency givin off could fry the electronic on board the ship. Now we don't know this for sure, but no responsibility has been directed to this event.
Ironic how an ICBM missile was launched 30 miles off the coast of Califronia within the same time frame the ship lost power. Wonder if the military used HAARP to kill the missile and HAARP knock ot the Ships power?
I posted that I "thought" I smelled a smell like an electrical short - I am in no way positive that's what is was. It went away after a very short time. It could have been a lot of things. Sometimes vacuum cleaners get that burning sort of smell if they get too full while they are being used. Has anybody heard if they are trying to get those people off that ship? That's what needs to happen because it's going to become unsanitary in a way that could make people sick very quickly.
They would have responded to the fire quicker except no one could find the key to the little box that's on the bridge..in that box is a piece of paper that says, "port = left side, starboard = right side, pointy end = bow, blunt end where the engine is= aft."
Coincidence, Cruise ship engine fire halts destination, removes passengers. Missile shooting out of Pacific ocean and Navy ship manuevers out of San Diego.

I got off this ship Sunday after a 7 day cruise. One day on the cruise I told my husband that I thought I smelled an electrical short. Now, I wonder if I did smell something that was going to be a problem within a few days.
@fayecombs If you're right, it means that the Carnival is in deep shit. If they knew they had a problem, and left the port with passengers... wow! I don't want to imagine... To the Chinese EMP people:
1. How were passengers onboard able to shoot video of the events?
2. How did the ship still have low level lighting and a PA system?
3. How come the EMMASAT satellite phone still worked?
4. How do you explain the smoke billowing from the ship?
