There were contractual problems between Mai's voice actress and SNK/Playmore, so, she left, and they couldn't just put a new voice actress (voice actors are big deal in Japan)

Benimaru was based on Jean Pierre Polnareff from Jojo's Birarre Adventure, The Psycho Soldier Team was based on... Pretty self-explanatory. Kyo was transformed from Syo Kirishima, due to the series focusing on the Yamata-no-Orochi Legend.
