  • God of all metal bassists!!!

  • Anyone that thinks LULU is good might as well just hand ur testicles over... That was the worst thing to happen to Metallica since poor old Cliff passed away...

  • Comment removed

  • that riff sounds beautiful cause he was using cliff's bass....

  • I think they don't play it live because of Kirk's Effects in the solo.....can amps (without pc) do that? I play guitar but I'm pretty sure you can't get that standard from an amp :/ love that song \m/ Love Metallica \m/

  • They really I mean really should play this one live at least one time. Itd be such a waste if they retire without performing this gem.

  • @Blueconnekt i agree. hell, they should also play escape before anything bad happens

  • from 2 . 49 to 3 . 34

    ............?

    what

  • I wonder what in the world went through his mind that made him cut his hair.

He looks more better with this hair

  • @Soldier1287 concert smoke and fire destroyed his hair, so he had to cut it off

  • @reyesmark382 there are 4 bassists really. You forgot Ron McGovney

  • the funny thing and the one thing that all three bass players of metallica have in common are each one of them has done 1 Instrumental and 1 bass solo during their time in metallica . that's the funny thing that CLIFF , JASON , AND ROBERT have in common .

  • @reyesmark382 * Instrumental song

  • Jason is the biggest loss ever..

  • @Jorbazz im not the biggest fan of Metallica, but robert trujillo is obviously more talented.... no offense

  • @TheJerry834 maybe he is more skilled, but i have never heard robert made any bass riffs that can beat jason's melodic riffs :)

  • @taylabrain, musically you can replace anyone but James who writes majority riffs, lyrics, arranges songs with Lars and is the singer. You can't replace the mainman in the band.

  • Jason can work a crowd the way no other man can, he's a loss to metallica

  • stop being such an assholes, cliff, jason and rob, they all are/were great, stop hating -.-

  • Death Magnetic and St. Anger were shit albums!!

  • JASON NEWSTED SHOULD RETURN TO METALLICA ROBERT TRUJILLO SHOULD RETURN TO MEXICO TO PLAY IN A MARIACHI BAND

  • @rod7661

    HAHAHAHHAHAH DMAN FUCKIN RIGHT

  • FUUUUCK i have always listened to this song just for the bass, and this is so fucking amazing!! Q.Q

  • 0:55-1:18 => EPIC!

  • They are playing a tour with the Black album in it's entirety...which means...we will get My friend of misery played in its entirety finally

  • well they actually did play escape live :D

  • they should play my friend of misery a lot more it always get such a huge cheer from the fans i don't think they eva have and play escape live

  • I wish I could party with metallica! Back when cliff was alive!

  • i liked that jason got out of metallica he didnt play the bass correctly. With the fingers

  • @MetallicaMarioSonic1 not sure if trolling or ..

  • @MetallicaMarioSonic1 Yeah, the first bass guitar didn't have a pickguard and wasn't played with a pick or anything ... O WAIT LOL

  • @MetallicaMarioSonic1 That's too easy speaking to no one behind a screen my friend ;) Tell meI don't play the bass correctly, I want to hear you.

  • I think they should use both Rob and Jason when they play this next year

  • with out a doubt the best song on the black album!

  • @sinisterdevilyna

A real fan would still listen if James quit.

A real fan would still listen if Lars quit.

A real fan would still listen if Kirk quit.

A real fan would still listen if They made five more shit albums.

A real fan would still listen if Metallica stopped making music

When cliff died they still made great music Example: And Justice For All...,The Black Album

When Jason left they still made great music Example: Death Magnetic

    Gtfu Asshole

  • @taylabrain ive been on youtube all day and this is the best comment ive ever seen

  • @taylabrain fuck off asswipe....

YOU CANNOT COMPARE THE DEATH OF CLIFF with LULU

YOU CANNOT COMPARE THE EXIT OF JASON with LULU

So yea fucking take that bitch... Every album Metallica made was good 1 way or another (I know some aren't as good as the first 5, but they are damn good rock n roll albums) Lulu was a disgrace to all musicians and if you don't think so then you're are a fucking moron that would be better off elsewhere... That whole LULU shit was awful, just plain shitty!!!

  • @MrGeltabs You are allowed to not like it, but what's important is that Metallica are able to make records that THEY want to make, and not what anyone else(including you) wants them to make.

  • @MrGeltabs Ok I never compared the death or quitting of either of them to Lulu.

Lulu was an art rock/thrash metal collaboration album with the great Lou Reed.

You are just so close minded to everything that is not metal. Just because its not metal

doesn't mean it sucks. If you didn't like what Metallica did with lulu. You shouldn't be listening to them. If you want a band that does the same shit for 30 years go listen

to fucking Megadeth. I love Megadeth but they have no variety.

  • what a fucking killer bass player

  • Metallica anounced that during The Download Festival they will play the entire Black Album. My firend of misery is in the Black Album and I don't want Robert Trujillo, even if he rocks as well, to play Jason's bass line!

  • @LayinTheSmackDown7 you might as well not want them to play any song from black ... or from justice, or load, reload for that matter!

  • @TehSorso Nah, that's not the same, you know My firend of misery was one of the songs that the band released and never gave a crap about, except Jason who created the bass line, made a song out of it, made a solo out of the song and made everyone like it.

  • @TehSorso He just means that for 'My Friend of Misery' since it was Jason's Main musical contribution to TBA

  • @StefanS117MC I hate when people like you get all butt-hurt just because Jason uses a pick. Just play the damn bass

  • @fofuksake

    Could be. :P

Maybe it did become really crappy.

But he could have let it grow again, so I guess he was kinda tired of it and in for something fresh. :P

  • I never realized how good jason was. Until now

  • I'd say Jason is a good as Cliff with about the same or less effort...come on...him versus Cliff with a pick, Jason doesn't lose that.

  • Jason Newsted lml

  • nothing but respect!

  • Jason has never fitted into the image's band, like rude and super-male which James has exploited for years. I think James thought that Jason attitude could threat this image of MetallicA and tried to endurance him. Bob instead doesn't care about belong to any pose or image, and the band know it and give him more permissions, Bob's attitude is more close to Cliff who had a 'hippie' look. Moreover, the guys are old and the things that before they were jealous, now they are more tolerant.

  • @joseinbush who the fuck is bob?

  • @RemusStelistu come on man, Robert Trujillo is an excellent bass player too and I agree with you, we love Jason first.

  • My Friend Of Misery => 1 good reason to play bass guitar

  • @Swanton619OfDX ok..

  • Seriously, I love metallica... and robert is a great bass player...

but jason had such kind of passion for music that cannot be described...

i hoping some day he will get back to metallica... and metallica will respect him as he should have 10 years ago...

  • çok özledim..

  • Even though his true potential in Metallica was never used...He still Showed us what he could do, And put on one hell of a Show, Jason...Respect for filling the shoes of Cliff and Doing it So fucking well....May cliff Rest in Peace and You continue the METAL!!!!!

  • Badass

  • "yeah" a song by Jason Nested

  • my friend of misery should have been the instrumental on the black album

  • Judge: Tell me Ms. Replay? where did Mr. Arrow click you?

Replay Button: Here! (gestures entire body) *cries*

Judge: And how many times did you say he clicked you?

Replay Button: OVER 9,000 times your honor!

judge: And what do you have to say Mr. Arrow

Arrow: Dude, I told you already I only clicked on her maybe 10 times.

judge: Mr. Arrow you're going to internet prison for an entire year.

Arrow: fuck, how am I supposed to do my job now?

Me: Where the heII is my arrow?!

  • the only thing i don´t like is that he plays with pick.

    and i use my fingers

  • @StefanS117MC so what? what we care is how it sounds dude! it doesnt make any1 better than other if he/she does not play with pick... here jason is the best example...

  • @esriful it´s just i´m playin without pick and every single time i´m playing this song i get kind a sick of my self because mine sounds so different. and if he played without pick, i had nothing to worry bout.

it´s just i´m playin the bass without pick. and everytime i´m playing this song i feel kind a sick of my self because mine sounds so different. and if he didn´t used a pick i had nohing to worry about

  • @StefanS117MC :) oki

  • @StefanS117MC but,,, jason is using a pick to play it !

  • @StefanS 117CM you get a completely different sound if you use your pick and i'm sure that what he was going for

  • i'm surprised people aren't dying of sheer happiness/bliss throughout this video...

  • It's a shame that Metallica never gave Jason the chance to be a real band member. He always was disrespected and discriminated....

  • @The70Sixer the reason was they had lost their brother, best friend, and best bass player ever, and they startedd drinkin even more than before then, so its understandable for what they but him true.

  • @The70Sixer But that was only because metallica wanted to see his breaking point. to see if he was hard headed like them. they were toughing him up. and they did. look at him now

  • @The70Sixer Yeah, sadly. They treated him as if he was a fan playing in the band.

  • @The70Sixer Well, now there's Rob and Metallica works perfectly with his extra-strong fingerpicking, no need to look back. We can only wish Jason good luck!!

  • @The70Sixer dude if that was the case he wouldn't have been allowed to do this solo :p

  • 3:04 METALSHOCK like if u know what im talkin about

  • spine tingling when the crowd cheers at 1:00

  • the next idiot that will click the dislike button will shit bricks

  • 24 personas se la chupan a justin gayber

  • I hate it when the top rated comment is a response to a comment of seven months ago....

  • 24 people must die

  • jason is a beast!!!!

  • messing up big time

  • He is my god !

  • Sweet! at 3:05, that was his bass solo from Flotsam and Jetsam's "Doomsday for the Deceiver" Album, its also the name of the song(I think).

  • @VixoThrasher It's not really My Friend Of Misery, it has the riff because Jason wrote it way before the Black Album. They just used this riff to be the main riff of My Friend Of Misery.

  • ..love...\m/...

  • 23 People don't know good music when they hear it!

  • Great!!!

  • @Cole072010 idiot

  • @Cole072010 your an idiot

  • I wish I'd seen Metallica live when Jason was still a member. I only got to see him when he went on tour with Echobrain, and I got to chat with him for a while before the show. He's awesome.

  • Jason was not as technically gifted as Cliff, but he was way better at connecting with the fans. Take it for what it is, but in my opinion, the demise of Metallica started when Jason cut his hair.

  • @greenbeaverfilms ; I read somewhere that Jason had to cut his hair because the intense smoke and lighting onstage from the 2 and a half year black album tour destroyed his hair.

  • Jason sí estaba a la altura de Metallica, desafortunadamente tuvo que salir por culpa de dos adultos que se comportan como niños.

  • :)

  • man jason had the spirit not that cliff hadnt but he had the emotion as kgkologlu said but in every show he gave all he could.

  • I saw Jason play his solo live in Melbourne on the black album tour!!!!! (in the early 90's) and i was absoutley gobsmacked!!!!! clung on every note! .... this takes me back there!!!!! thanks for posting!

  • JASON

  • I don't think I've ever literally had a an "eargasm" until just now.

  • Comment removed

  • ha and people say he sucks

  • jizz at 0:58

  • @Fluffyolphert

Now with special foot tapping action!

  • Tabs ? 1:49-2:36?

  • Well, Cliff was only around for a few years while Jason spanned most of Metallica's career, but on the contrary, Jason didn't nearly have as many writing credits as Cliff did (Cliff had credit in 10 songs, Jason in only 3)

  • @ChocolateTundra Which three did Jason have? I know two of them (Blackened, My Friend of Misery) but what was the third?

  • @ChocolateTundra porque a jason no le dieron mayor participacion, de haberlo hecho metallica tendria muchos mas grandes temas, you translate, i like my spanish

  • @saveuslayer Really cuz he was Cliff's replacement after he passed (R.I.P.) it just ended up he didn't get nearly as much creative freedom as Cliff did.

  • am i the only one who likes jason better than cliff?

  • @TropianTV nope. im right their with you, cliff was great but jason is just amzing.

  • @TropianTV idk how old you are but for me uts like with cliff theres about 2 or 3 shows with him and about 3 interviews. theres no connection to him as an artist really while as jason you about 15 years of interviews shows and then take into account he's fucking AMAIZING and prob the biggest asset to metallica's live shows youi have some sort of connection to the artist whether it be concious or sub concious. thats my take on it idk if you agree and you dont have to

  • @TropianTV yeah

  • @TropianTV no :)

  • cliff and jason are the reasons y i play bass

  • @codylmnop me too. I first saw Jason's bass solo at San Diego. After that is was just logical to play bass and not guitar :D

  • @codylmnop are you using pick or fingers? :)

  • Jason Newstead is an amazing bassist and I'm not dissing him in any way, but no one could ever replace Cliff. He was, in my opinion, the best bass player of all time.

  • i love it when music can send shivers your spin

  • Idk why people say cliff was the best, his bass lines are pathetic and easy and all he did was use distortion big deal Jason and Robert kick his shity ass

  • woulda been cool if james and lars made this an instrumental like jason wanted it be originally

  • Pure awesome.

  • such an amazing, talented player lost from metallica:(

  • Cliff was Amazing

    Jason was Metallica

  • @kiren77 You got your facts mixed up there son...

  • Out of all the bass players metalica HAS HAD, Jason was the best.

  • @FMJman1 are you kidding me? jason better than cliff? someone needs to brush up a bit on their knowledge

  • @FMJman1 no way dude

  • He's off making good with his echobrain experiment now, haha, or rockstar supernova....he is not half as good a player as trujillo.

  • @KNT0791 hes a painter now pretty crazy

started doing it mostly when he tried to catch a falling amphead and tore somthing in his shoulder

  • This... is why I play bass...

  • jason, I miss you so much...

  • and i dont get why he was thought of as the new guy....

HE WAS THERE FOR MOST OF METALLICA!!!!

  • how many volume knobs does that guitar have???

  • @MrUbniToad Guitar? It's a bass... -_-

  • @hanauarc Its a bass guitar. Dipshit

  • This would be better with Cliff :'(

But Jason wasn't that bad... Now we got a monkey !! :D

  • @ArjanSlingerland but he's everyones favorite monkey :DD #LOL

  • great song

    great band

    great bass player

    I Love Metallica

  • Круто !

  • Fuckin Jasoooooooonnnnnn !!!! like James usually introduce him.

  • Jason was awesome. And I realized it after he'd left. Now I hate myself for not giving him the credit he deserved. Such an emotion in that song and I agree with him, it should be the instrumental song of the Black Album.

  • @kgkologlu Hell yeah i agree with u and him.. James and Lars didnt allow it to be because they were jealous of this bass riffs' greatness !

  • @kgkologlu rlly? was it meant to be an instrumental? :o i think it would be awesome, metallica should have at least 1 instrumental in each album, all of them are epicly perfect xD

  • @kgkologlu Welcome to youtube, Mr Hetfield!

  • @kgkologlu whoa dude, you're talking like your Hetfield LOL

  • I have allways wondered who those characters are on Jasons shirt that he often wore back then, looks like two jazzdudes.

  • That`s such a beautiful bass :D

  • I loved this Bass '' Riff '' so much that I learned to play it on my guitar.

    props to Jason.

  • wena, wena, wena!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Solo tab?

  • One of the best and catchiest bass lines of all time. Dammit I love Metallica.

  • I was there at this concert when I was a sophomore in high school...proof? they showed a cow pissing in their opening movie when they filmed footage of pullman. fun times. lars talked shit about napalm death during a drum part. good concert nontheless.

  • you cant tell me the black album wasnt metal or that it was pop... it was has and always will be the heaviest motha fucken album out i dont mean its fast i mean its HEAVY as in slow and powerful

  • @bobonnwoof no man , if you want heavy in any way you want look for master of puppets or ride the lightning
