I'm an Irish girl but I was born in America...but by this gentleman's songs I was able to see the land my father and his beloved fathers did. Mister Ronnie Drew, rest now, you sleep with our fathers.
His Voice isn't perfect but it is Raw Emotion and 100% Real anyone can sound great with auto tune but It isn't real and don't move you like a Real Singer RIP Ronnie
If there's anyone we need when it comes to music today it's Ronnie Drew and Luke Kelley. The world is a little sadder without them but we have their music at least.
It's like crisps (as the British call them): they make salt-and-vinegar crisps, and either you like them or you don't. Some people do like them, though. I just hope you've found "a flavor you do like." Cheers!
Crisps, regardless of the flavour, are still edible and must pass certain hygiene and health and safety standards before they can be consumed. Folk music, alas, is self-regulating and relies on tradition (seniority), inclusiveness (give everyone a try) and informality (anything goes).
The fact that nobody told Ronnie Drew 45 years ago to stop singing and playing is a by product of the lack of standards in folk music.
The flavour of music I like is good music which is objectively classifiable.
you fecking stupid cunt, go back too sucking old mens cocks. its what you best, you piece of dog shit, i bet you fuck your sister too""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
Sorry for offending you. I'm fully aware that a lot of people adored Ronnie but I never did and I think you should consider my comments in earnest rather than hurling abuse.
In essence, he couldn't really play the guitar and couldn't sing and, oh... couldn't act either. I saw him in a Xmas panto around 6 years ago and he was really shite.
But a lot of people miss him.
Good news, by the way. Since tuneless Ronnie died I've started to enjoy Irish music.
Some folk say that Bob Dylan can't (and never could) sing worth shite - Not every musician carries a perfect tune in their voice, not every musician is splendid on the guitar... Some have qualities beyond the technical - They convey and add something to the music they perform that can best be called honesty and poignancy. Ronnie was one such musician, hardly a "perfect" voice, nor perfect in any other way. But he had one hell of a heart, and that heart shows in his music.
Agreed, and to all those making stupid comments here, I'd ask ye to remember what folk music is. Its not polished, its not performed by classical warblers in bow ties. Its music from years of blood and sweat and spirit and soul and Ronnie just about sums all that up in everything he ever did.
@oxfordeddie how dare you to talk about a man who has done so much for the world than you could ever do ? so many people adore this great man because of his contribution in music, and if you think he could not sing you can find yourself a neat little island where nobody likes Ronnie and live there in peace.
@zwerverbeer I couldn´t agree more! maybe it would be a waste of bombs, They are to stupid to die! This is real music, I like Shane mcgowan too, "fairytale of new york" brilliant!
A great voice from our noble past has left us swirling and dancing past the silent quay. His river of life has now ebbed and flowed out to the ocean of night.
He was my teacher for more years than I care to remember. Having been taken out of Ireland at a young age, he taught me my country's history. Then he was a constant, being there through the good and sometimes bad times.
But he's still here while we still have his music. Thank God for the ability to record. God bless Ronnie.
For me is paradise a place i can drink, and lisent to irish folk music, and dance whith the lovely girls. Play for me the day i`ll be there, then i have something to look forward to ;-)
Can someone please post the lyric of the next to last and last refrains? They are for sure different from the first three, but can't find the lyric of this version anywhere, and i can't fully understand the words because I'm italian and not so good in english. Thank you. Up the dubs! :)
He's said himself that his voice is getting stronger and his hair is starting to grow back (as he lost it all due to the treatment). Whether this means he is actually getting over the cancer or not I don't know. Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope that one day he will sing with the Dubliners again.
Last I heard is he is still undergoing treatment for his cancer. I saw him on the Late Late show, his beard was gone, didn't look to good unfortunately..But who knows, maybe he'll be singing in a year time..
I'm an Irish girl but I was born in America...but by this gentleman's songs I was able to see the land my father and his beloved fathers did. Mister Ronnie Drew, rest now, you sleep with our fathers.

Ronnie died in St. Vincents Hospital, Dublin on the 16th August 2008 following his long illness, with throat cancer.
He never lost his wit or his voice and apparently during his last few hours, he asked the nurses to remove his oxygen mask, so he could have a cigar!
A rare ould Dub - may he rest in peace.

Ronnie, as I sit and listen to this beautiful song finding it almost impossible to give name to the joy you and & Luke have given me over the years.

I think this is right, and hope it helps:
And what's it to any man whether or no
If I came to the fore when she gave me the cue?
She closed her eyes tightly as she murmured full low:
"Be good enough dear for to buckle my shoe".
And
And what's it to any man whether or no
If I ventured quite gamely to see the thing through?
When she lifted her petticoat silent and slow,
and I tied up my sleeve for to buckle her shoe.
