  • I'm an Irish girl but I was born in America...but by this gentleman's songs I was able to see the land my father and his beloved fathers did. Mister Ronnie Drew, rest now, you sleep with our fathers.

Rest, love...and keep the Sons of Ireland.

  • Just as Awesome as him self!

    Rest in Peace

  • His Voice isn't perfect but it is Raw Emotion and 100% Real anyone can sound great with auto tune but It isn't real and don't move you like a Real Singer RIP Ronnie

  • Wuuuundr.Fuld.woice..I:AM::: A RONNY..FAN...Søren P. Denmark...

  • Gone but oh so vividly remembered :(

  • If there's anyone we need when it comes to music today it's Ronnie Drew and Luke Kelley. The world is a little sadder without them but we have their music at least.

  • ronnies voice gravel voice is the best folk voice GOD REST YER Ronnie

  • We miss you, Ronnie.

  • liam987!! lol good 1!

  • He had a fantastic voice.I would love to hear any person in the world try to sing this song better than Ronnie.

  • @noyna9 i couldnt agre more..this reduces me to tears x

  • lol

  • It's like crisps (as the British call them): they make salt-and-vinegar crisps, and either you like them or you don't. Some people do like them, though. I just hope you've found "a flavor you do like." Cheers!

  • Which school did you go to?

  • Ya dirty swine -- belay that foul lingo !

  • I can't imagine disagreeing with you more.

Many people miss Ronnie, I doubt if many will miss you.

Just carry on eating your crisps.

  • Some folk say that Bob Dylan can't (and never could) sing worth shite - Not every musician carries a perfect tune in their voice, not every musician is splendid on the guitar... Some have qualities beyond the technical - They convey and add something to the music they perform that can best be called honesty and poignancy. Ronnie was one such musician, hardly a "perfect" voice, nor perfect in any other way. But he had one hell of a heart, and that heart shows in his music.

  • well said male

  • Agreed whole-heartedly. There's magic in that rough tone of his.

  • @oxfordeddie You fucking dirty bell end cunt .

  • Agreed, and to all those making stupid comments here, I'd ask ye to remember what folk music is. Its not polished, its not performed by classical warblers in bow ties. Its music from years of blood and sweat and spirit and soul and Ronnie just about sums all that up in everything he ever did.

  • @oxfordeddie how dare you to talk about a man who has done so much for the world than you could ever do ? so many people adore this great man because of his contribution in music, and if you think he could not sing you can find yourself a neat little island where nobody likes Ronnie and live there in peace.

  • @zwerverbeer He would be there alone then

  • @Alexilund hopefully, otherwise they should bomb the island before it gets democratic power :)

  • @zwerverbeer I couldn´t agree more! maybe it would be a waste of bombs, They are to stupid to die! This is real music, I like Shane mcgowan too, "fairytale of new york" brilliant!

  • Whats it to any man whether or no. Whether Im easy or whether Im true.

    Ronnie couldnt sing?

Excuse me while I tie up me sleeve to punch on your nose.

  • Hard man!

  • Always puts so much feeling into his music

  • Ronnie RIP

I grew up listening and lovin your voice..

You'll be missed every time the song is heard..

  • it's up for grabs, who sings this best? Ronnie Drew or Liam Clancy? I can't say, both are the greatest of the GREAT !

  • The one and only the only one who could sing with a unique voice there will never ever be another.

    Up the ra

  • RIP as may you allways Ronnie Drew:)

  • excellent song ! 5stars!

  • He was my teacher for more years than I care to remember. Having been taken out of Ireland at a young age, he taught me my country's history. Then he was a constant, being there through the good and sometimes bad times.

But he's still here while we still have his music. Thank God for the ability to record. God bless Ronnie.

  • Ronnie died in St. Vincents Hospital, Dublin on the 16th August 2008 following his long illness, with throat cancer.

He never lost his wit or his voice and apparently during his last few hours, he asked the nurses to remove his oxygen mask, so he could have a cigar!

A rare ould Dub - may he rest in peace.

    Hero to all and Legend

    Thanks for the Music

  • Ronnie, as I sit and listen to this beautiful song finding it almost impossible to give name to the joy you and & Luke have given me over the years.

Words that spin like a gossamer threads of gold. Stories woven by an angel from the finest Damascus silk.

    Thank you & God bless

  • Can someone please post the lyric of the next to last and last refrains? They are for sure different from the first three, but can't find the lyric of this version anywhere, and i can't fully understand the words because I'm italian and not so good in english. Thank you. Up the dubs! :)

  • I think this is right, and hope it helps:

And what's it to any man whether or no

If I came to the fore when she gave me the cue?

She closed her eyes tightly as she murmured full low:

"Be good enough dear for to buckle my shoe".

    And

And what's it to any man whether or no

If I ventured quite gamely to see the thing through?

When she lifted her petticoat silent and slow,

and I tied up my sleeve for to buckle her shoe.

  • Thank you very much!

  • Welcome, you are.

  • Please report here if ya get any info on his health!

  • He's said himself that his voice is getting stronger and his hair is starting to grow back (as he lost it all due to the treatment). Whether this means he is actually getting over the cancer or not I don't know. Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope that one day he will sing with the Dubliners again.

  • I think only Luke could perform this song as well as Ronnie does here...amazing.

  • Nooo, noooo!

Like's great and all, but not as good as Ronnie. Oh nooo.

  • Actually, this version is not a rare version. It's on Ron's (Ronnie's) 1979 CD. 'Guaranteed Dubliner'.

  • How's he3 doin'

  • Last I heard is he is still undergoing treatment for his cancer. I saw him on the Late Late show, his beard was gone, didn't look to good unfortunately..But who knows, maybe he'll be singing in a year time..

  • @fcorb1

No one will iver best him....I pray for him..whereiver he is,,
