  • Frostbite.

  • the hull of the ship is slanted upward, so the bow actually slides up on the ice and crushes it with the weight of the ship

  • I've never understood how any ship can break through thick ice. What exactly causes the ice to break, the weight of the ship or it's forward momentum? I suspect it's a bit of both, but which is it mainly?

Also, about how thick would the ice be on a trip to, say, the north pole, or maybe across Siberia's arctic passage?

Could an icebreaker reach the north pole in the dead of winter, or is it only possible in the summer?

Can surfacing submarines really break through ice like in the movies?

  • It´s a combination, the ships displasement and the forward momentum brakes the ice. Often it´s possible to pump water from one side to another in purpose to actualy make the ship to role like it would do in heavy seas! The swedish brakers also pump large amount of air under the bow, the purpose is to "lubricate" the ships bottom against the ice!

A large icebraker like russias nuclear brakers are able to brake several meters of solide ice and can brake through huge walls

  • @jrg8008, I know this comes a bit late, but modern icebreakers break level ice by bending it downwards under the ship until it breaks and slides under the vessel. This is a continuous process and there's only little vertical motion in the bow - the ship doesn't really "climb" on the ice. In ridged ice field the icebreakers rely mainly on their forward momentum and sometimes they have to back up and ram the ridge several times before breaking through.

  • heel interessant!

  • it is the swedish navy icebreaker so i think it is in the actic sea or the north of the baltic sea

  • which sea and coast is that ?

  • Frej is operating in the gulf of bothnia, Swedens northern coast.
