  • I wish I could have seen a more tighter painting... but its great nonetheless.

  • Amazing talent.. I need to put the hours in!

  • Hello, Very nice. I was wondering: what colors did you use for the bottom lip area? which reds? That tone is difficult to achieve, which is why I ask. Also, what colors do you use on your palette? and what medium do you use to thin out the oil paint? linseed? be awesome to know.

    Great work! thanks for sharing!

  • @SrLaberynto You will find answers to most of your questions on the FAQ section of my website. Visit seamusberkeley . com/faq

    Great work!

  • amazing brush control

  • is this canvas textured?

    its great btw

  • @Annaishmint A little with a rough brushed gesso base.

  • Done right Proper!

  • name of the song?????

  • @OoohWaaayy Your question is a good one. Answer is now posted on video information section.

  • Hi du you have a tutorial on this particular video my problem is the skin tones .

  • @914peru The only video so far is the "Fundamentals of Painting" DVD which covers the basics. Skin tone mixing skills are best acquired by methodically learning to mix all colors first, then working from life.

  • you won't go hungry

  • This is beautiful... it's insane how you can start with just simple blocked-in color and end with such an amazing, detailed portrait.

  • wicked

  • Talent

  • that is sooo good :)

  • geniale art zu malen

  • i love how you hold the brush i cold never hold it like that . it looks like your just slapping the paint on but it comes together in such fine detail you make it look effortless i wish i cold paint half as good as you

  • cuando veo cosas asi....solopienso en que no aprendere a pintar caras ni puesta de maria¡¡¡ mare de deu, que facil parece mirando esos pinceles moverse.....y que churros me quedan a mi con cara de muñecas de goma¡¡¡

  • how many time did you spend on it?

  • You can read more about these paintings on my website. Look under the FAQ section (see question 4) where you will find the answer to your question and more.

  • whats the name of this song????

  • Nice work! You might enjoy my film on the painter Pietro Annigoni.

  • it is a magic!

  • nice nice. small as hell!

  • Your work is great! What was the actual length of time it took you to paint the portrait? Do you work wet into wet or were there drying times in between? The volume you create with the light and shadows is pretty fantastic. Thanks for the tips!

  • BRAVISSIMO ! ! !

  • Awesome!!

  • speechless

  • you work is exelent!

    tu trabajo es exelente.

    mi ingles es malo!

  • Amazing ! love it !!

  • I'm speechless. I'm sure I don't have to tell you what a impact you have on troubled youth who doubt themselves. Wish you did a little mentoring. You have no idea the changes you could make on our future youth. "Art is not what you see but what you make others see".

  • You WORK is a EXELENT!

  • But your english isnt.

  • I always come back to view this when ever I lose my mojo for painting and it some how revives me. Thank you!

  • I'm happy that you find it inspiring - it is one of my motivations for painting.

  • This is really beautiful! I love to watch an artist at play.

  • Nothing better than play!

  • Did you paint this in one day? And I see that you said this was canvas, but the surface almost looks like you troweled on a thick layer of something. May I know what that is and why you do it? Really nice work by the way! (But I know you know that already----lol!)

  • Two. Canvas prepared with gesso. I talk about this at length on my Fundamentals of Painting DVD. There is a short clip of it on my website - just look under the video section.

    Happy painting.

  • Did you have to wait for layres to dry or is this in one siting?

  • No waiting, painted wet-into-wet, my preferred approach.

  • what is he painting on

  • He, being me, is painting on canvas.

  • great work , very beautiful process.

  • how much time did that actually take?

  • I did not time it - it took a while.

  • This is one of my favorite portrait demos to watch. I really like your approach.

  • amazinggggg

  • Creepy way to start. Amazing results. Loved it. Keep up the good work.

  • Nice

  • Bravo!

  • kudos to you! beautiful painting. and the fact that it was all done wet on wet is even more impressive!

  • very realistic!

    i love it! x

  • where's the model?

  • holy shit thats amazing rock on!!!

  • Wow man. That is beautiful.

  • class..!!

  • such goood work!!!! amazing!

  • amazing!!!11

  • excellent work

  • This is a really nice demonstration. I was surprised at the skin tone. Maybe it was lighter in person. It looked like clay. Then, in the end looked great. Very nice job.

  • Very Nice!

  • Wow, now that is brush control. No drawing 1st, just mapping with those little dots and shapes.

Very pretty and clean (not muddy).

  • I watched the video many

    Astonishing

  • woW! looks like she's coming from the surface hahaha.......amazing!!!!!!!!

  • how did you keep the paint from blending in the eyes?

  • Entrancing to watch. Lovely work.

  • very nice, thanks for posting

  • Just out of curiosity How long have you been painting? (in general)

  • bravisimooooo

  • Wow, your work is beautiful!

  • helloo, Did this take days to complete? part of the reason i dnt use oils is they take forever to dry! my art teacher is always goin on about mixing the oils with something and they dry within an hour?? do you know what it is?

  • Quick Dry Medium. The dry time depends on the ratio of medium to paint, and on the type of paint. My white paint dries much slower than any of my pure colored paints.

  • Bravo,e' un bel soggetto ed un ottimo dipinto, penso che la technica usata sia la migliore per fare un ritratto, il talento e' indiscutibile!!!complimenti

  • Hi seamus, im an artist as well and my number one problem with painting is the inability to form correct skin colors.

What colors do you use on your palette / the brand of paint you use.

  • i love your work man.

  • whaaaaat, great job man. I like painting myself, but I have never tried oil. Keep up the good work!

  • beautiful works and strokes=)

  • Seamus...you are great!

  • great self confidence, beautifull ligth and expression

  • Wow! How long did this take in real time?

  • About 20 years, hundreds of portraits from life and several hours.

  • i like this answer

  • that is beautiftul i love your style

  • So Beautiful and fun to watch you push that paint around!

  • Glad to read you have fun watching it because I have fun painting it!

  • That is AMAZING! I especially like the way that you made the light catch the cleft under the nose. The blending, the detail, the shadows! Hats off to you sir! Great job

  • I appreciate your feedback.

  • i like watching it. MORE!

  • More in the works including a DVD.

  • It's a great painting.

  • Glad you like it.

  • oh my god. you are so magical. do you teach?

  • Yes and there are two workshops coming up soon. Please visit my web site at seamusberkeley dot com and look under the 'Events' section for more information.

  • d thanks seamus, great brush work and lovely lively finish. do you paint from a photograph?

  • I mainly work from life and only work from photographs when necessary that I have taken during the modeling session.

  • exelente muy buena tecnica...

  • Gracias.

  • that was fun wet on wet technique? x) nice.....

  • Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Amazing stuff...I work harder for results not even close to yours.

  • I want to be able do do that. You are SO GOOD. I can watch it over and over.

  • You can. A little instruction can be useful. Check out my workshops on my web site - look under the Events section.

  • why are you so good?

  • A lot of practice painting people from life.

  • Beautiful.

  • Thanks!

  • The painting technique is Alla prima. it requires great skill and knowledge of drawing.

  • Indeed. Only a few of us can tackle that one and make something that is astounding, not muddy.

  • I think you asked about medium in another comment. I don't use any, just a little odorless thinner in the early stages.

  • In the later stages do you use poppy, linseed, any varnish, or liquin?

  • wow

  • Like your succinct comment!

  • Absolutely amazing. I want to learn this technique. Where do I start?

  • One, I give workshops. Two, working on an instructional DVD.

  • thanks for the inspiration...

  • You are welcome.

  • Seamus...great portrait! I love the steps and the applications that you used. Different than I have been using. How long did it take till completion?

  • wow. very god.

im painter but no like you, im just dijital.

but i want to learn how to paint oil.

  • amazing

  • nice work Seamus, keep it up, how can we stop. fellow artistrev

  • Absolutely Amazing!

  • Beautiful, delightful and sensitive oil painting.

  • Awesome!

  • I paint, but nothing compared to you. I lost my home during Katrina and now live with a sister. I have been commissioned to do a portrait of a woman. I've painted faces but never a PORTRAIT of an individual. I need the money bad and any advice is greatly appreciated! Can you email me? turnbow 55 @ hotmail

    Thank you !

  • Well, she is real - so is the painting.

  • Your Gift and Talent is breathtaking!

I am truly honored to be able to see you work!

    TALLKITTEN1 / L.Turnbow

  • I do like to paint and happy that you find enjoyment in seeing the work.

  • Great great work and video, I like how far you can hold back on your brush, it's a constant battle for me. Looking forward to seeing more !

  • Holding the brush by the end helps keep the painting looser. Yes, it is a practice.

  • excellent painting AND video- thanks for the inspiration

  • More in the works.

  • dang! Another one!

And this one has some duct tape holding it down....

    either 9x11

    or

    11x14

    ?

    Still, very impressive!

  • Actually, even smaller than that: about 9x6. Love duct tape!

  • cool

  • Ótimo!!!

  • Thanks for looking.

  • The eyes are the most difficult.

    community. webshots . com /user / moonelf

  • Yes, the eyes require the most time to complete and, of course, are the most important feature.

  • Just out of curiousity, do you sculpt as well?

  • thats amazing how it goes from looking like a kindergarten did it to real life looking...no offence

  • That is no offense at all - in fact, that is the fun painting: abandonment to the process and observing the unfolding!

  • I admire your awesome skills--

  • Thanks for writing. Stay tuned for more videos!

  • Amazing to see how this works!! (and - to me - even more amazing how you can get such tiny details like the glint in the eye with such a big brush...).

Does oil dry slow so that you can blend the layers a little, or do you need to get the right color on the brush? (I am so sticking to graphite for a loooong time, this seems way too complicated.)

  • The correct color on the brush applied in the correct place in the right size and shape is all that is necessary.

Graphite is fun, a big chunk of charcoal can be even more fun - helps keep the drawing loose.

  • Oook....i'm going go try and paint now. :) thanks for the video

  • You are welcome - happy painting.

  • Excellent!!! I must purchase this....thank you for asking her to do this....

    Ashley's Father

  • Thanks for your comments Anthony - will be back from Guatemala soon and we can talk about the purchase then.

  • Fantastic might be an understatement. Thanks for letting us watch.

  • Thanks. Checked out your work - do you ever work from life?

  • nice work. check out my work too when you get a chance.

  • fantastic! its great to see different approaches

  • Thanks, glad you liked it. I'm in Guatemala painting now - more videos later.
