This baby use to get played on The Original Hot 103 WQHT - NYC. It also crested at #2 on the Billboard Club Chart for two weeks. Kept from the top by J.M. Silk "I Can't Turn Around" and Dead Or Alive's "Brand New Lover"
The blonde got that crazy Nina Hagen look in the face from time to time =)... But whatever, that was just second-class. The black lead singer they had just had an awesome stage presence. The "Stars" weren't much any longer without her...(IMHO)
I too have the 12-inch record of this song with the instrumental on the flip side. It was long ago, but i remember dancing my ass off to this song at a gay bar in Dallas/Ft Worth many moon ago (late-80's). Still wanting to dig it out and digitalize it and pass it on to a DJ that mixes for a "Trash Disco" night at the clubs. Where is that damn vinyl?
@mactrace I remember dancing to this song at The Village Station in Oak Lawn in Dallas, TX back in the day!! I LOVED the song then and still LOVE it today!!
I remember this on top 10 dance tracks back in the summer of '87, loved to hear and dance to it then in Lily's in Lake Charles, La and the Kingfish in Lafayette,
I remember being kinda freaked out that the Belle Stars had been whittled down to only 3 members...... great hi-energy dance track but not enough to compete with Bananarama.... the original lineup of the Belles was much better...but this remix is kinda cool.
i have a 12' of this song in storage but til i can access it i've been searcing in vain for any sign of this track at all. many many thanks for posting :)
This great song was not promoted correctly in the U.S. I worked in the radio promo dept of MCA Records, the distributor for the record; I was all over this 12" (the mix is different than the one heard here) and when I asked my boss how this was doing at radio, he did not even know about the record. The MCA 12" was also unique in that it was pressed at 45rpm instead of the standard 33, which made The Belle Stars rock, with the bass player mixed hotter than the girls vocals. Should been #1!
Ah, this brings back memories of the local UHF station that used to get a feed of Much Music. I used to spend... er... way too much time watching all kinds of cool videos of "odd" groups that I'd never heard (assuming I'd heard of them at all) in the US. So great to see some of the videos (or at least the songs) showing up here after so many years.
This is a great track but these guys calling themselves Belle Stars is sort of like calling A Fish Called wanda a Monty Python movie. A sax solo by Miranda would have helped too. Still, nice tune
Thanks so much for posting this video. I've never seen or heard this song before, although I remember seeing the album jacket for the 12-inch single in a store somewhere. It always puzzled me, because I was under the impression that Sara-Jane, Miranda and Lesley had been booted out of the band. I was surprised to see the single and come to find out that they WERE the band. That's what I get for trying to translate German pop music mags on my own. Great to finally hear it.
Sorry - the audio is actually out of sync on my video - it's not your player! This is the only mpg I have though and wanted to at least share what I had.
The Belle Stars had a b-side to "sign of the times". i think it was called 'madness'. i actually preferred that song to 'sign of the times'. i'm sure there is no video for that song, though. thanks very much for posting this vid!
It seems a little like a music video from "Jem And The Holograms", but that's fine by me. This is only the 3rd Belle Stars song I've ever heard (after "Iko Iko" and "Sign Of The Times"). Great group, whether in full or in part.
Thanks for putting this up! I've been looking out for this. I wonder why only these three stayed together? Sarah-Jane looks like Nicolette Sheridan in this video too!

Sounds a lot like Bananrama,circa jolly /swain,particularly the middle 8 thingy--it's a cold cold world...love it though.

@prettybionic To me the keyboard stuff at the intro sounds VERY close to Prince's '1999' ...

That would explain her indifferent expression. SJ and Lesley seem to be really into and Miranda looks like she's punching the clock.

Apparently Miranda did do a lot of sax for this song but it wasn't used in the end result. Would have loved to have heard that version.

Sarah Jane moved to the US and now does yoga classes, retreats, sound healing and medicinals. Lesley's now runs her own PR company.

This song makes me (and always have)wanna get down! I thought it was going to make the US Top 40, but at least it made the Top 5 on dance charts.

This is such a guilty pleasure. I actually have this 12 inch. I wish someone would put this song to a video about George Bush.
