@wendyow Bilboa is one of those examples of a song that isn't really memorable in the verse, and by the time you are ready to nod off, the chorus comes and grabs you. And then, for some strange reason when the verse is repeated, you suddenly appreciate it.
@analyzingfunny The funny thing about reel to reel, is that when you put it on YouTube, it still goes to a digital format, and all the extra frequencies that you had are suddenly gone, just as if you recorded it digitally.
Some day, we might have an online format that will duplicate that saturation, but I doubt it.
Another first class performance! Rob, you played this tune as well as I have ever heard it. Your versatality and musicianship inspires me to practice my guitar even more! Thanks for all your posts. I truly enjoy each and every one of them. Happy New Year my freind!
The AKG 414 B-ULS was unfortunately discontinued a few years ago. You can sometimes find them used. I have not found a better mic for guitar. Another factor is the pre-amp. I have an Avalon VT747-sp, which is a Class A tube pre. I always e.q. everything with that channel before I lay down the track, so it makes a bit of difference in the sound. The real tone is in the guitars, by Gary Zimnicki.
@joselo1944 Oscae Aleman was one of my favorite all time guitarists. My father and I used to listen to him. My dad used to give me Oscar Aleman CDs. I always loved the sound of his attack, because he used a heavy thumbpick, which enabled him the subtleties of finger technique, and the fierce attack of the heavy thumbpick. Nato Lima and many South American guitarists used tortoise shell thumbpicks, which allowed the same technique. I have always tried to replicate Oscar's tonality. God Bless.
Wow. As a guy who has loved Django and later forms of jazz guitar since I was a kid in college (a long time ago), this is a real treat. Thanks so much for posting. And thanks to your dad, too.
Watched again....more amazed than ever. Absolutely wonderful in all respects.

This has always been one of my favorite Kurt Weill tunes as well. Do you also know Bilbao? Love that one.

Beautifully done, Rob. If I wanted to hear the lyrics, I would listen to Walter Huston or Ella Fitzgerald. Happy New Year to you and your family.

Dear Rob
Rest assured that if you sought to achieve the shade of the great Oscar Aleman, you have succeeded brilliantly.
Congratulations, Jose Luis.

Hi Rob
Beautiful song and beautiful memories of your father.
In the 40 and 50 in Argentina was the famous jazz guitarist, Oscar Alemán, who served in the hot club of France with Josephine Baker.
His style was exactly like your interpretation of this song, and I have heard this subject by the musician.
This is just an anecdote, a historical musical.
To want to take you and your family happy and prosperous new year, from Buenos Aires, Jose Luis.
God bless you.
