Unlike the rest of the reviewers here, I bought this camcorder at a STORE in Singapore. This gave me a HUGE advantage to try out the camera BEFORE I bought it! I paid about US$450.00 for the CA6 [which included all the required cables, 2 CD-ROMs of software, carrying case, 2 batteries {one 1.5-hour and one 3-hour battery}, 4GB Ultra ...

Good job on the review. The CG6 has been a great camcorder for me as well. Walmart sells other models that appear to be cheaper now with less quality. Although, the the low cost waterproof version sounds interesting.
Thank you for the excellent review. The recording to MPEG-4 container was a key fact that was not intuitively obvious in the first glance of the product.
Just purchased this video recorder but I am having problems uploading the videos.
I have converted the mp4 to wmv and then uploaded but still not working.
I downloaded SUPER you talked about and did a conversion to avi, wmv then put into windows movie maker and then saved again to PC and tried to upload again.
Still does not work.
When you convert in SUPER what setting do you use as I want to use WMM to add info.
I did finally get one video up but took 1 day of starting and stopping upload.
Perhaps you could be more specific. Where are you "uploading" this video to? if it is a site like youtube, facebook, etc.. You should not need to convert it at all. The only reason I needed to convert them was to open them in a video editing program. But now I switched to a Mac running final cut and I no longer need to convert them for any reason.
Not off the top of my head. I seem to recall using an AVI container format with stream copy enabled for video and uncompressed 44khz for audio... but I could be wrong.
Have you tested the CG9 at all? Im thinking about getting that model rather than the CG6. If it has a bad review I'll go with the HD1000, but I would hate to spend that much because I won't be able to afford a green screen, lights, ect for a long time
from what i can work out, the mp4 files work with adobe premier cs3.
im not a expert on codecs and filetypes but if the mp4s the cam produces are the same as the mp4s you can download off of google video, there should be no problem
I found a free software that easily and accurately transforms mp4 into avi w/o loss (no compression). It´s extremely easy and fast. google for mp4cam2avi...
In spain, u can buy CG6 still just from one online retailer, Asha, for just about 160 euros w 2GB SD card included; I just did...
im not really sure how to charge my camera.. its not broken in any way that i know of but sometimes i will plug me camera in and in a couple of hours the battery is still on low power. any suggestions?
another program you could use to convert it is avix codec i think it is. i had tons of .mp4s and couldnt fastforward or rewind so i use the program left it for a few hours and it converted it to AVI(more than one movie) it usually takes about 20-50 mins for an 1h40m vid. also you can adjust the bitrate and stuff. ill find out the name and get back to you.
Yes, but converting it in that manner changes the codec and therefor sacrifices some quality. What you want is to convert it with a stream copy to a different container format.
For what this is worth, if you own a Macintosh, or if you just want to transfer the files to iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC, the Apple software does just fine with the MP4 container format, including iMovie for editing.
Despite the problem this is right now, I'm happy Sanyo just uses the same container format and codec and calls it a day. AVI is a mess in some ways, and this approach will avoid confusion in the long run if this becomes standard practice.
I agree - the MP4 container is the best choice. I just wish more software would support it. Hopefully in the future all cameras will use this and standardize on it.
its because i lost my first one, I am a 15 year old kid and this is a perfect camera to put in my pocket and film anythign from school videos to skateboarding videos...
Thank you very much for the review. I've been looking for a small, flash memory camcorder that was easy to carry around and upload to my computer. Most of them have too many draw backs, but this one looks great for the price. Thanks for the review, I learned more from it than anything I have read.
Got this camera 3 days ago from wallmart...the best small, low priced, quality camera you can buy. i paid 199.00. it does everything like in this video. perfect!
seriously, this is totally coherent, comprehensive, and makes me feel a lot better about buyying this camera. I was really pissed when i couldnt figure out how to edit it, but your video solved that =)
I just bought this camera largely bases on this review and so far so good, but the quicktime mp4 files are out of sync, the sound and audio do not match up, whereas on the camera, the sync is fine. The picture quality in low light is great, but I'm using to record drum track videos and that out of sync problem is a bit of a bother.
Excellent review! Very detailed and concise. I'm really glad you showed the comparison video from the cheap camera to the Sanyo, that really made an impact on my decision. I use a Mac for editing, do you think I'd have any issues use this with iMovie?
You gave such a comprehensive reivew on this product. This really helps me in decision making. Looking forward to seeing more vidios of this kind from you.
I just bought a Sony DVD105 and didn't like it due to the difficulty of editing since it had no USB or firewire connection.
I saw the CG6 on sale at Walmart for $199 and picked it up. The zoom and focus on the Sony is a little quicker, and the Sony had a little bit better picture and sound, but the convenience of the SD storage, the small size, and the easy editing make the CG6 a much better camera for my needs. It also takes MUCH better stills than the Sony.
very good review. I've had my CG6 since April 07 and i'm very happy with it. Was about to buy the C6 online from ebay and was glad to know it was offered out in US at Walmart as CG6. The mp4 format can easily be converted to .avi using Mp4Cam2AVI software. Or much easier i just use Nero to burn it directly to DVDs. The pictures are decent and the video is great. I really liked it being small and i bring it with me always.
Sorry for late reply.. No, unfortunatly, the power connector (the USB port) is right nesxt to the tripod mount, so when mounted, the USB port is inaccessable. Maybe you could drill a hole in the tripod mount.
I love this camera, the pictures are very detailed, with a tripod . audio is not tinney. My only suggestion would be to get a second battery. I am very happy with it.

When I try to upload it says that file format not correct.
I like to use windows movie maker to add items to video

Not sure what to tell you there. I upload files to youtube all the time directly from the camera in the native .MP4 format.

Is the image that this camera captures that blurry or is it the YouTube compression that damaged the sharpness of the footage?
I am talking about the last random sample videos. They look pretty blurry as compared to the studio footage of the tutor.

Oh my yes.. Youtube can't display even 20% of this camera's detail. So sure.. the original footage is MUCH clearer.

Your video review is INVALUABLE.
You also have a lot of knowledge about file types, and editing software, which is good for the more advanced users that want to deal with that.
Good recommendation on Super. I will look into that. I'm guessing: convert it to .avi, and edit with vdub. Great work man! keep it up

can the camera be run off a external power cord and still use the tripod connector?
interested in using it as a car dash cam with cigarette lighter for power.
if a suction mount would screw into the tripod mount and allow for direct dc power from the Car, it may work out
