ok im confused by taco and eman's argument so ima just say what im pretty sure is true: Valve made portal + portal 2 to introduce us to Aperture Science, they also made us HL+HL2 to explain the aliens, good chance thier either gonna make a whole new game with both of those subjects, or thier gonna make hl3, no promises on Portal 3 though, and my guess on the whole new game, is because of the fact that Valve has NEVER made it to 3, Left 4 dead 2, portal 2, half life 2, nothing further.
@jechet10 also don't forget half-life 2, episode 2, but at the same time, valve has said they plan on doing a L4d 3 (if they can think of a way to make it not seemed forced, IMO Europe or Asia) they want to do a half-life 3 when they feel the story is ready for it, they are working on the episodes, slowly, and i've even heard rumors of TF3 in development being one of the reasons TF2 became F2P but portal, was never suppose to have a sequel, it explained the inside jokes
@jechet10 that exist in the half-life series, and also explored a new type of game engine that is supposedly going to be put into episode 3, but they changed the ending a few years after release to allow a cliff hanger, but with the popularity of Portal 2, it leads to the idea of the portal continuation, or at least the mini game aspect of the multi-player game, since half-life death match, admittedly seem forced, a co-op physics puzzle would be more appropriate
In the start, Portal was just a project by some University students, IIRC.
As Valve has done many times before, they hired the developers and then worked together. There has been mentions of each series throughout each other though. Black Mesa in the first Portal's ending song, and with the Aperture reference in HL2: Ep2.
Someone probably realized the potential of linking the series during the development.
Or Valve could've realized before even adding the student team.

@tacochibigirl There was a vote on the final hours of portal 2, where it said "What game would you like to see next?" There was like, half life 3, team fortress 3. And they might consider to release the most voted game. And that wasn't portal 3, that was half life 3.
