of other people wanting to take a pic with him and he took it all in stride... I was suprised because honestly, the dude looked exhausted. He hung out all over the festival after that. I thought he was really down to earth and nice :) Maybe he's gettin' old and that helps. And btw, I just moved to Pittsburgh last Dec. and every show I go to has the most disappointing, lame, crowd. I'd toss a bottle too.
wow... I met David a couple months ago. I had rolled into CampOut East wayyy past dark, nowhere to sleep - no camping spot. I think it was about 11pm? And I purchase my tickets and there's David just kickin' it in the ticket booth. He looked way tired and i felt horrible for asking but... it meant a serious amount to me to get a pic with him. I thought he would get annoyed. He said "Of course!" and came around outside so I could take a pic with him... Then he got slammed with a whole bunch
In being reflexive of the previous posts, I've never met the band members but I hope folks cut them some slack. Being a touring musician is ruff, unless you're a traveling salesperson and have to put up with their daily sh*!, then let them have a bad day. After all, we are but mere mortal humans who need to process our life experiences, and then eat and sleep at the end of the day. This is one of my all time favorite tunes. I feel blessed they wrote it and I have been able to enjoy it.
David is a little bit of the volatile artist, but I don't really think he's a bad guy... He's 3 for 5 in coming out and hanging with people at the shows I've been to, and he bought me a beer once and chatted with me at several of them. Hickman's genuinely a really nice guy.
Anyway, that said, I don't think being nice has much to do with musical success...there are hundreds of assholes without half the musical talent these guys have who have had hits...
I agree they are one of the best bands around but if you knew David Lowery & how he treats his fans & everyone around him It would be no surprise to anyone why they haven't hit it big. Johnny Hickman is the only reason the band has any connection with their fans. Go to a show once & hang around after to see who comes out to say hi. Hint: you won't see David 9 times out of 10.
@JoeCool031619 I love these guys too too, but you're totally right about Lowery. I've seen him throw beer bottles out into crowds, berate fans who interrrupt his stories, and condescend to crowds who don't get his jokes.
Its funny, because Hickman is the complete and total opposite. Might be the key to the band making all of those amazing tunes over the years...
@TheRuncible I'm glad other ppl know how he is & I'm not alone. I seen them June 2 in Pittsburgh & the only thing he had to say to the crowd was that we smelled like wet dogs. No one knew what he meant & then the staff told him they had to clean the floor & he said with what a wet dog. Not thanks for coming out to see us, just you ppl smell like a wet dog. what a guy. It's no wonder the band isn't big b/c if he treats everyone around him like that why would anyone want to sign them?

Smells like wet dogs here. And Joe Cool, it's about music, you know. If you want someone to talk to, get a shrink.

This one of the best bands in the last 20 years, It saddens me greatly they never got the fame they deserved.
