@Stalkerchick2 that's what the author tries to do, you're not supposed to know or really make up your mind but leave the theater/classroom with doubts on both fronts
@TheQtip1581 nobody really knows. that's why the movie is called "doubt". it's gives you just enough facts to make a valid argument but the film/play itself never really resolves the problem
I believe this film has not much to do with paedophilia or even morality. Just think of the title - 'doubt'. Thats all it is about - the woman was doubting her faith in God. Its a classic example of the use of the defence mechanism of displacement. She could not psychologically deal with the fact that she was doubting her own faith, that which she had dedicated her life to, so consequentially her seed of doubt manifested into a full fledged persecution of a more acceptable target - the priest.
@efrainherrera1 It was from Modern Family! that show is my #1 obsession thats how I know and also because Meryl streep is perfection when it comes to Acting! AND IT CRACKED ME UP WHEN CAMERON SAID SHE COULD PLAY BATMAN! LMFAO!
I think this is a very difficult and tricky piece made into movie, because the play is very well-written, and not a lot of hollywood effects, the plot and the good dialogues rule the whole entire movie. There are about 5 - 10 minutes that How Meryl Streep and argue with Philip Seymour Hoffman, it is the phenomenal acting skills between them make the climax of the movie. So if you are a film enthusiast enjoys subtle movies, I think you will enjoy it a lot.
@laurenstroudma i thought that too, cause i remember doing this play in high school and the play only has four characters so i wondered how they;d make it into a movie, but they did a beautiful job
@thelupoistheman1 Oscars is all about the hollywood, I admit Slumdog Millionaire is pretty good but because the book is so amazing, but like you mention it is not even close to this one.
Dude, what the crap are you talking about! The script and the direction was spot on. The cinematography and the cast made the movie. This movie really should have been nominated for more things than just the cast.
Very nice, emotional and sometime even sad movie. The acting was brilliant. I'm not a big Meryl Streep fan but she's very talented and looked stunning here. Amy Adams was no less imressive - she deserved the Oscar for this supporting role and finally Philip Seymour Hoffman and Viola Davis were amazing as well
Its so interesting: in the movie, Sister Aloysius dutifully explains the "chain of command" to Sister James, if any problems could/would arise, yet SHE fails to follow the same pattern herself - can you say, hypocrite?
@jusstgivemesomething oh, and to answer your second question, THAT...was a transistor radio with an earplug, something that was extremely popular back in the mid-60s-
Amzing film but the end kinda confussed me...Does she have doubts about whether or not he was guilty, or doubts in the Catholic church as a whole? I personally think it was the latter...
@JSasRays thats what alot of people say but i think she was dead sure that he was guilty. i think that because he got a kind of promotion afterwards she thinks that the people high up in the church are a part of the molesting aswell and so she is losing her faith in the church itself...well thats what it sounded like to me anyway.
@JSasRays he probably left because he was tired of the Sister going off on a personal witch hunt against him - she never was able to prove ANY of her suspicions, and she allowed her own blind hatred get in the way of what she was supposed to do, which was serve in the church capacity-
@christheone8773 Yes, but you're forgetting, he had been in 3 other churches in the previous months. Why? Also, the boys mother said he was gay and the wine, ect... I really think he did do it. At the end when she says she has her doubts, I think she is talking about she has her doubts of the methods she used. By lying and going against the priest ect..
@JSasRays AND...the fact that he served in three other parishes in the past five years never proved anything either, AS he was inviting her to call those parishes to find out the real reason why he left AS WELL AS trying to get the nun's name from whom she got this info from- I think the father's relationship with the boy might have been a bit unorthodox and he could have scaled it back a bit, but I really didn't see anything homosexual about it-
@wkcjls TO ME, I think that her seed of doubt started long before the setting in the movie started - and no matter what, she allowed it to fester and get bigger and bigger, till, once the damage had been done and it couldn't be reversed, her doubt turned into a great big pile of GUILT-
Incredibly powerful movie,I was very surprised to learn that it wasn't even nominated for best picture. All of the performances were extrordinary, the scene with Streep and Davis is one of the best scenes I've seen in a long time.
@thewomaninthemoon AGREED, this is a very powerful movie - I never watched it when it was released, but when it came out on DVD, I couldn't tear myself away from my TV screen-
@8bitheroics it's never said for sure, she makes accusations so he has to leave the school/church.. but it's mostly left up for interpretation whether he was guilty of anything or not. at the end she says she has "doubts" about what she did, hence the title I guess.
As much as I was pleased to see this made into a movie, after seeing both the stage and and screen versions, I have to say that the stage version is more powerful because the audience knows only what the four characters (Mrs. Miller, Sister Aloysius, Sister James, Father Flynn) tell them, nothing more.. Don't let my words stop you from seeing the movie (Viola Davis's performance in particular is not to be missed), but do catch a stage version when and if the opportunity presents itself.
Ahh religious flame wars about the pedo priest stereotype. For anyone wondering, unfortunately 100s of people are pedophiles, and I can assure you they're not all priests.
@Danni3lilbirds THERE was never any substantial PROOF of whether "he did it OR NOT" - Sister Aloysius had her own self righteous suspicions, a LOT of half-truths and LIES, and a heaping dose of personal hatred and unfounded observations against the father- when you put all of that together, combined with the position she held at the school where she worked, that would be enough to even drive ME away!
I've seen plenty of movies that Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep, and Amy Adams are in, and I can honestly say that their performances in this movie are my absolute favorites of all three.
@naruto11143 I didn't say you were, I said 'a couple of priests' and it's true read the news, I agree it's not all catholics just a few who ruin their reputation.
@TotallyHumiliated I'm catholic, and it's true there were some priests that have raped children, but very few priests have, so i think its ridiculous when people make stereotypes saying most priests do that, im not saying you are though, I'm just saying that annoys me when people do that.
@15saranghae15 Do you have any statistics to back up that claim that most pedos are atheists, or are you just spreading propaganda that makes you feel good, pretending that only those without god (in your view) could do such acts?
Taking into concern that atheists tend to be a lot less criminal than any other population group, I think you are either making things up or has accepted a lie as fact because it corresponded with your worldview.
@mlovesd1998 Atheism means one does not belive in a God, one could still be religious, one could be a Buddhist, but true, primarily when speaking about religious people, one would typically be speaking about theist, those who belive in a God.
Either way, whatever it means you are without religion or not, what has that got to do with anything?
Non-religious = pedo?
Seeing how religious people (theists) are 10 times more likely to be criminally inclined (statistics) one would figure otherwise
@mlovesd1998 Sorry, was just rilled a bit up by 15saranghae15's comments which was dripping of bigotry, so soaked was her words with it, it tends to anoy me and get me on the bad side, and then when I come back here to this comment section where that was, I get rilled up again easily, so dont take offense if I seemed a bit hostile.
And feel free to ask any other questions, if you are genuinely curious about something, I will be more than willing to answer and wont be so hostile then :)
@15saranghae15 I find that even more outrageous after you just whined about how you hate the stereotype of catholic priest being child molesters, because only a small percentage of priest actually does such a thing (if it is even 1 percentage).
So please, either apologize for your outlandish accusations towards an entire group of people, or provide data from a non-biased source that supports your claim (non-biased as in your priest saying so isn't really evidence in any sense of the word)
@fifo816 We never find out one way or the other. That's part of the film's point. The relationship between the priest and the black boy who is being bullied DOES look suspicious, from a certain point of view, BUT the priest also has perfectly rational explanations for his behaviour and the boy's mother seems to support him too. It is clear the boy is being beaten by his father, for example, and the priest is a figure of support to him. You should watch the film; it's really quite good.
@TechFade its not an ipod, its a mobile radio or something like tht. even if, tht doesnt matter. the movie is about an important and serious topic, i dont think details like tht are relevant, are they?
but honestly first i was kinda confused, too, but when you watch the movie, youll see tht its no ipod
@HSWRKUHHUJHU even if its not an ipod...you can see the glint of the large LCD screen and those are ipod earbuds he's using. they didnt have earbud headphones like that back then.
@TechFade THE setting of this movie takes place in 1964 at a Catholic church in the Bronx, and THAT WAS a transistor radio with an earplug that she confiscated from the boy - transistor radios were very popular back in the mid-60s-
my english isnt very good and theres one thing i dont understand. wht does father flynn say 2:02? "wht did you hear? wht did you see? tht convince you so ...?" i dont get the last word. thank you
Meryl,Amy,Philip and especially Viola........all gave a brilliant performance...........no wonder all were nominated for oscars!!!!!!!!!!!Viola had a screenpresence of hardly 15 to 20 mins .................but she left a lasting impression!!!!!!!!!Thumbs Up for her!!!!!!!
Wonderful movie! I can see why they all were nominated for an Oscar. Amazing acting on all their parts. Meryl Streep is absolutely the best actress of your generation. Every role she plays she is completely believeable. This movie holds my attention every time I watch it. If you havent watched it, make it a point to do so.
This trailer, as well as the one for "Pan's Labyrinth," are easily the two best trailers of the past decade. They are the Perfect Trailers that have absolutely nothing wrong with them at all.
from the ending of hte movie..the nun told him that she called some other church or something...and she said to him that she had proof of his sexual harrasment from the call. After that,...the preist left the Church...
NOW: if he left,..isnt that a sign of how he prrbly DID do something? To think about it, if i was in his possition and accused of this, i wouldnt back down unless the statemant the nun made was right. SO i think he did do it..even though i hoped through out the movie he wouldnt
the movie leaves you in DOUBT....cause if you watch this mutiple times you don't know if he did it? Your sides will change everytime you watch it...and leave you in DOUBT....EXCELLENT MOVIE!!!!
This had to be one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. It was so boring, and the entire thing felt so pointless! I learned nothing from it, because there was no form of a lesson presented to the audience. How the heck did it have 5 academy award nominations? It was terrible.
If meryl streep acting was a flight it would be 1st class;) she such a Brilliant actress from top to bottom any Role she patray she Nail's

@tvdd1973 but remember he said doubt it almost as good as certainty and the film instills the doubt with us.

How many people watched this after watching Pedobear doubt trailer?
thecapone45 1 year ago 22
sadly this trailer portrays the film as somewhat humorous and a bit of a horror/shocker, sadly that is the opposite of what it truly is.

Is there any character Merry Streep CAN'T do? God shes so versatile. I love her.

The thing is, although it is a serious issue, its not like he is killing anyone, in terms of drama I mean.

It says online that this movie takes place in 1965. If so, why is the nun taking away an ipod touch from a boy? 0:15
TechFade 1 year ago 4
@TechFade its not an ipod, its a mobile radio or something like tht. even if, tht doesnt matter. the movie is about an important and serious topic, i dont think details like tht are relevant, are they?
but honestly first i was kinda confused, too, but when you watch the movie, youll see tht its no ipod
HSWRKUHHUJHU 1 year ago
@HSWRKUHHUJHU even if its not an ipod...you can see the glint of the large LCD screen and those are ipod earbuds he's using. they didnt have earbud headphones like that back then.

@TechFade He was in one of those time traveling movies!
DudeWithPie1 1 year ago
@TechFade THE setting of this movie takes place in 1964 at a Catholic church in the Bronx, and THAT WAS a transistor radio with an earplug that she confiscated from the boy - transistor radios were very popular back in the mid-60s-

This had to be one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. It was so boring, and the entire thing felt so pointless! I learned nothing from it, because there was no form of a lesson presented to the audience. How the heck did it have 5 academy award nominations? It was terrible.
