Quite a combination of stuff there. I could hear PAO audio from both STS-121 and 118 (Barbara Morgan's name was mentioned). It is a good combination of stuff. It sounded pretty good on the head phones (I don't need to crank the speakers as I was there for three of these). Good work.
@Atlacatonatl Great Question! The true definition of 'space' varies depending on who you ask but in general it could be defined by the atmosphere's significant friction effect on a man made vehicle's re-entry process (around 76 miles above Earth's surface). This is a loose definition with a lot of co-efficient factors not addressed but in short the SRBs are jettisoned around 27.6 miles above the Earth so the answer would be 'no' - they are not in space upon separation.
Too bad the two tragedies doomed the program. The booster seal and foam issues didn't help. The concept of a reusable rocket also turned out to cost more than a traditional multi-stage rocket. The Shuttle was a miracle of technology though. But now NASA is going back to the standard 60's style rocket with the Orion.
@jeffhanson1 i agree, but what will it take to get us on track again...we were aiming for the stars, now it seems were taking backward steps. Its frustrating..you mean its all about money? *sighs* i suppose i just answered my own question huh?
@KinaNafasi Originally it was about safety when Bush 2 ordered the program cancelled back around 2003. If you Google "Bush cancel shuttle program" you can learn more. Now it's also about money since the country needs money here on Earth first before you can reach for the stars. The cheaper replacement, the Orion series, has already been designed so NASA will be back soon.
i watched every launch! i was excited like a little child on christmas! Very sad that the shuttle has come to an end. Best Shuttle Lauch video ever! Great!
OK, it's good (if you missed a real one) but in addition to a monster sub woofer, have someone do a drum roll lightly on your chest and you get the sensation we had at the press site on the shore of the barge basin, a little over 3 miles from the pad. Max pressure at about T+20 seconds.
Now sadly this is just yesterday's history... thank you Congress and President Obama! Anyone have a flight scedule to Khazakstan?
Wow man that was incredible!!!!! That's like an I-Max experience!!!!! I commend you!!! I'm saving this to my favorites, do a few more I'd love to hear them!!!!
gr8t! on my sound system: 2-6 foot tall Magnaplanar speakers driven by a 400 W amp & 2-bass reflex speakers with 14" woofers, 8" midrange, & 2 kinds of tweeters driven by a 200 W amp. i didn't run it wide open because the wires & power amps were getting hot but, even so, the space shuttle taking off provided 115 decibels of acoustic power 20 feet away from the speakers. not as loud as "Disaster Area" (see The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) but impressive anyway.
Thanks to Mr. Obama, we have ridiculously high fuel prices. It's no wonder the Shuttle program was ended. Remember, he did what he promised- made energy prices skyrocket. And now the Shuttles never will again. What a shame.
I can't thank you enough for posting this video! I grew up in Fl and remember at school going outside (As a class) Looking skyward and feeling the love our presidents had for this program. I felt so free even at 10 Years old. It was amazing! We moved to the beach. Watching the Shuttle Blast off and Flame bounce off the ocean is indescribable. I had a chance to go back "Home" for the final launch. It was like watching my childhood die and fly to Heaven. Thank YOU indiegun for the memories!
I was supposed to see the second to last launch, STS-134, which I think was either Endeavor or Discovery. But something went wrong and it didn't launch the day I went. I was never able to make it to another launch. Now with the end of the shuttle program, I never will and never did get to see a shuttle launch in person. I am EXTREMELY disappointed. All I can do is watch videos like this on youtube. Just thought I'd let you know you're not alone!
The sleek and simplistic look of the space shuttle is amazing. I hope one day to have the honor of piloting any of the new spacecraft that NASA builds... or maybe even a private company! :)
Great video! What year was this video of a launch? We went to Fla. in 2005 to see Discovery's "Return to Flight" launch, as our friend Jim Kelly was the pilot. Alas, the mission was scrubbed as we were literally on the VIP guest bus headed to the launch. It launched 2 weeks later without us there. @lionfire17 I watched a video of a launch like this in one of my friends cinema in his house with the volume turned up, the house started vibrating because of the speakers :L
How do they track the shuttle so well when it's already so far up while zoomed into? I'd think they're would be a lot of shaking and movement. Are the cameras gyro-stabilizing with some tracking software or just really good hands?
@VideoRoom207 According to Matt Melis and Kevin Burke (NASA aerospace engineers) the footage in this video of the Shuttle during SRB Separation is the closest POV from the ground ever filmed. It was done using a 150 inch Brashear lens (4000 mm) based more than 20 miles north of the launchpad with only human hands at the controls. I wouldn't doubt that stabilization software might have been at work here but in essence it was a real person at the controls the whole time. Amazing...
So amazing! I've such similar footage many times but when you watch this in 1080p you are really taken back and remember how much engineering when into all that and how far mankind has come from sticks and stones.
I watched this video with tears in my eyes, since the audio so perfectly resurrected my memory of watching (and hearing) STS-5 from the press site on November 11, 1982. Thank you for posting this remarkable video.
@davidamills Thanks David. When I made this it was admittedly (primarily) so that I could experience it myself. However, after reading your comment and so many other wonderful ones like it I now realize just how much this video means to people all over the world. Thanks for making my day!

REALLY terrific, thanks so much for posting this. I witnessed a launch as a VIP (ha!!) on an IBM Study Tour many years ago. Then I could not believe the sound and associated body shaking force field that I felt that day. I always hoped I could witness one again.
This gets some way, but I need way, way more power in my speakers!!
Just imagining that there are human beings.. me.. you.. sitting on that going to space.. incredible. WHY are we not doing this more then trying to kill people on the other side of the earth? Stupid.. stupid.. stupid.
I can't help to think God is looking down at us like a father to son and saying, "I'm Proud of You". Keep looking outside of the glass! The sound and video are incredible, Thank You!
What an AWESOME video, you sure did a great job of capturing this on video! I had lived in Florida for two years back in 2001-2003 and even though I lived on the Gulf side, I was lucky enough to see the smoke cloud when they took off back then.
I was lucky enough to witness, photograph and shoot video of 7 launches. This is better quality than you can get from being there in person, unless you were practically on the pad!
It's not about just being 'louder' than other videos. There are a whole lot of elements here that are subtle, informative and historically important. No real need to 'try again' as you suggest. If something is lacking feel free to post your own shuttle launch video.
I really enjoyed your video. I myself got to view a launch of Discovery from one of the "VIP viewing areas". When I found out we'd be 3.5 miles away from the pad, I was disappointed, until the "rattling" noise started (don't know how better to describe it) (really becomes pronounced starting around 1:50), which I think was individual acoustic shock waves coming several times/second that HURT my ears. 3.5 miles away was plenty close with no ear protection, but it's still amazing how loud it was.
The other thing that really struck me was how bright the exhaust flame from the solid rocket boosters is. You never get a true impression of it on video. It was sun-bright. If you stared at the flame and then looked away, it left a clear afterimage, even with your eyes already adjusted to broad daylight.

Good video. No need to "try again" this was good. Thanks

@Chrisdenancy

@leisulin
The other thing that really struck me was how bright the exhaust flame from the solid rocket boosters is. You never get a true impression of it on video. It was sun-bright. If you stared at the flame and then looked away, it left a clear afterimage, even with your eyes already adjusted to broad daylight.

Not the best audio. Some videos are louder. Try again ! Anyway, thanks for the post
