@Baritanist He really is a pop singer who sings opera arias. It's a shame that these pop singers get all the attention while actual opera singers who have the voice, technique, and training to sing opera get left by the wayside.
Sure for now i guess.. Pavarotti is the one.. But give time to Paul.. Maybe he will be a legend too? We will see. But is true..the men got an incredible voice anyway..
I was ignorant of anything "opera" until PAUL POTTS came onto the scene. Now, because of PAUL POTTS, I love opera & am learning . Thank you, PAUL POTTS, for opening my mind & heart to opera. Sincerely ..................
Hopefully, now that you are learning about opera, you will discover "real" recordings of this aria by some of the greats. Paul Potts is terrible, but, if he helped you learn about opera, he was good for something.
@lynnybee888 I'm so delighted that you're learning about opera. I hope you will listen to a lot of opera singers and contrast and compare them. I hope you will also attend live operas and enjoy those, too.
I just search about this Rinaldo Viana and he it`s great too.

Does anybody know what roles Paul has played with amateur opera companies? I'm trying to figure what opera roles he could sing that would work for him. I was thinking maybe Mozart or Baroque opera where a lighter voice is needed. I really hate that Paul sings this aria though. Nessun Dorma is an aria for a dramatic tenor. Puccini is rolling in his grave at this horrible interpretation.
For Bath Opera, an amateur company, after beginning in 1999 in the minor roles of the Prince of Persia and the Herald in Puccini's Turandot, he performed the leading roles of Don Basilio in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro in 2000; Don Carlos in Verdi's Don Carlos in 2001; Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni in 2003; and Radames in Verdi's Aida in 2003. He also performed the role of the Chevalier des Grieux in Puccini's Manon Lescaut for the Southgate Opera Company, an amateur company, in May 2003.
unholymonkey, that was the quickest way to reply to edhyde's question: "Does anybody know what roles Paul has played with amateur opera companies?" What difference did it make?
I can also tell you Paul recently completed his 97 concert world tour with great success. Over 267,000 attendees. His album, One Chance, has sold well over 4 million copies and probably is approaching 5 million. It went to #1 in 14 countries and has earned numerous platinum awards.
I agree with you about it being inaccurate but it is not in the extreme. If so please identify something that has remained there having a great degree of inaccuracy. I posted today to have an item removed due to this but it was not a flagrant error.
Many of the things posted on the Paul Potts wikipedia page are edited by the moderator of the Paul Potts MySpace Family website who has direct communication with Paul and Julz. He is trying to keep the information current and accurate.
If he needs loads of vocal training it is amazing he is having very favorable reviews on his worldwide tour. He is getting training. He hadn't taken voice lessons or sung in public for four years prior to BGT. He has also performed in several operas in principal roles with Bath Opera and Southgate Opera, both well-respected amateur opera companies in the UK.
Volume for volume's sake isn't everything. And he does have volume but also tenderness, compassion and a crystal clarity. Paul has qualities in his voice that others don't have. He is great in his own unique way. He consistently brings tears and chills to people all over the world from both his recordings as well as his live performances. There's plenty of room for all of these singers.
Nessun Dorma was never among my favourite arias. It seemed to be muscle-bound. Paul's version is among my favourites. His lighter touch has freed the song of its excess muscle, allowing the words to breathe and allowing us to feel its melody. Paul's interpretational talents have made Nessun Dorma a melodious poem.
Paul has real style, artistically and personally. (How the heck does he have a lighter touch and so much power? Delicious mystery.)
I would imagine that Paul is REALLY tired and jet-lagged since his schedule is so full. I could see this leading to some inconsistency. But this particular performance seems very strong.
...the woman they show applauding at 3:00, is she just an audience member? She seems "special" somehow... ??
Wow! The training and experience he's getting has made him even better... and that "brings tears to your eyes" quality is still there... maybe even stronger than before.
Paul is definitely going places. How can there be any doubt at this point?
What you have just seen here,my friends, is an opera singer! I've said that I never really liked Nessun Dorma, but damn, he may just change my mind! Awesome, in terms of delivery. I just hope that incredible ability causes him joy inside....but I'm fairly sure it does.
He's combining a fantastically improved technique with all the feeing he puts into this every time he sings it. And still so modest, so courteous.
People may or may not like what Paul does, that's one of our basic freedoms, but anyone who makes any allegations of the genre "he's not the real thing" is definitely not listening properly.
My eyes are misty, I cannot write what I want to write, it's too deep down inside of me.

Maybe that song fits him best, but he's no one-trick pony.

Paul Potts wine. Hmmmm.
Nessun Dorma. A full-structured wine with heavy tannins. Needs aging for development.
Con te Partiro. A Merlot with forward fruit. Begs for a English blend to achieve full roundness.
OK. I'll stop.
