Firewall is not a piece of hardware. From my point of view, Firewall is a tool that protects applications and users from some networking threats. There are software firewalls and hardware - appliance box - firewalls.

But even if it's a HW, it's just silicon. The logic comes in software.

btw: Firewall does not mean security. It's just a tool that helps you be a little bit "more" secure.
