  • One of the biggest differences between music of the 70's and today's music is harmony. What group today can even come close to what the Ebonys are doing on this record? The soprano and the baritone are absolutely wicked on this song (in the 70's all the groups sang like this). Another factor is that the Ebonys are singing in key. Long live soul music and all it's practitioners.

  • @rievans57

Can't have harmony without a group. There aren't any more male singing groups. It's either rappers rapping, or a solo person singing who sounds just like all the rest of the soloist artist out there. How sad that the art of harmonizing is gone.

  • all you have to do is listen to the opening of this song to realize it's a classic!

  • Interesting how music like this stirs so many emotions in so many. On one hand sad because many have left us from this time period in life...very happy because music like this reminds us of how it used to be.

  • I remember this song from June, 1971....very big hit here in Detroit, the "D". I had just graduated from high school....sigh! To be in the early 70's again...

  • They just don't sing it like this anymore.

  • camden nj finest

  • Amen to the glory of the 70's I bare witness that this was the best time for real R&B music that had real meaning with the intent of expressing ones love for that special beautiful woman. Just Because Of You, I'm a Happy Guy, You're The Reason Why. Where did it go? I'm just glad I was there during that time. The music back then was the BOMB!

  • I performed at a show with the Ebonys in the early mid 70;s with my group the

Authentics (Boston, MA) I believe Jennifer was pregnant at that time, they put on a real great show.

  • Long live Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff

  • @hedonotlikeme The Ebonys use to appear in 2 south jersey night clubs called "Club Harlem" and the other nightclub was the "WonderGarden" they always partied with the local people-

  • NOW THIS IS OLD SCHOOL!!!!!CHECK OUT THE VOICES THEY HAD BACK THEN...... I LOVE IT AND MISS IT......

  • This one of the greatest love songs of all time.I was in high chool when this song came out i have heard them all and this one is most relatable to 1 man and 1 woman if you know what i mean.

  • omg!! blue light basement clothes burning actions

  • This is REAL music!

  • WOW ! Praise God for their contribution to REAL MUSIC and LOVE .

  • @nuttyprofessor64

YES I AGREE. I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE IF IT WERE NOT FOR GROUPS SINGING SONGS LIKE THIS.

WE ARE REALLY BLESSED TO HAVE EXPERIENCED SUCH BEAUTIFUL MUSIC.

  • Thank you for this!

  • This is why I became a musician. I used to hang out at Sigma Sound Studio and am glad to be a small part of the Sound of Philadelphia. ggbluam, go to oldies.com Collectable records should have their greatest hits on CD. They are not the best in assembling soul music, but they compile the most popular songs most of the time.

  • This is the first time I ever heard of this group, They are badass. Stacks & Applejacks

  • Dip Set.

  • Dip Set

  • LOVE IT!!!!

  • Great song it made the pains of growing up ease. I played it so such much and it cracked but I still played it crack and all.

  • this is one of the best r&b groups out of jersey.love this old school stuff.long live the 70s.peace.

  • I have goosebumps and I am crying my eyes red. BUT, they are happy tears because it is bringing back so many good memories. In all the years I've visited Utube I never think to look up the old tunes. Now i don't listen to anything else but the old jams.

  • Wow! I remember this slow jam during my teens! I'll have to search somewhere to find the Ebony's greatest hits on CD. Right now I only have "Forever" and "I Believe" (flip side) on a 45 record. Thanks for posting. What a blast!!!

  • The Ebonys' "You're The Reason Why" was the first single on Gamble & Huff's Philly International label to chart (two previous singles did not). It entered Bilboard's R&B chart on 5/22/1971 and peaked at #10. It peaked on the pop chart at #51.

  • PURE CLASSIC!!!!!!

  • Eat your heart out Philip Bailey......

  • tell yo momma that I met her over thirty years ago with Suzette Dorsey and Barbara Best. I also went to a wedding of one of the group members. Tell yo momma I STILL love her and always loved and will love THE FABULOUS EBONYS....FOEVER!!!!!

    My name is Lawrence

  • @nukeystik I will pass the message on. Wow, i didn't know so many people remembered her.

  • Hey Ms. Coils!

Tell yo momma I met her over thirty years ago with Suzette Dorsey and Barbara Best. I went to one of the members wedding with them too. Tell yo momma I STILL love her and have ALWAYS loved The Ebonys...FOREVER!!!!!!!

  • You have a lot to be proud of.

  • wow this is real music

  • MrBama21 I'm from Detroit too. Yes I agree that Philly pretty much kept pace with Motown, but we never had anyone at least a male singer with the power of this guy. His voice blows you away with power. He's a blower for sure. Yes I do miss them so very much. Anyone knows what they're doing now. And CoilsKinksCurls how is your momma doing. She was so cute in these pictures.

  • MY FIRST LOVE/OUR SONG

  • Great Job "impacking" and thanks for bringing back the great memories.

  • While Motown & Barry Gordy was doing their thing, The Philidelphia Sound was doing theirs. I'm from Detroit and I can say that they both were neck and neck. Philly would hit em with " You're the reason why" by The Ebony's and Motown would come back with the Tempts. feating David Ruffin in " I could never love another." Overall, they had this nation rockin. They will be missed dearly.

  • FYI~This group is from Camden, NJ. LOVE IT!! I'm a native!!

  • The reason why? Is because this music era was just wonderful.nuff said.

  • Well, your mama was in one of the most underrated groups in r&b history!! Give her my best...

  • I probably was in kindergarten when this song came out, but remember hearing it. I just found it on youtube. i don't know much about thisgroup, but they sound great! Please tell me the 2 lead players on this song, including the song, its Forever. (like a tag team Ruffin and Kendrick) This group is great. The lead mans voice is very sexy. Any woman would love him to sing with that rugged, sexy voice.

  • I absolutely love this song. Oh my...

  • I was born too late!

  • A Soul CLASSIC from 1971!

  • I saw them when they were just starting out in Woodstown,N.J. what a tight show. they sound good live. i love this Jam!!!!!!

  • I remember this from back in 1973 and I was on the bus coming out of class in high school and another kid had a radio on with this awesome jam blasting. What sweet days those were in East Los Angeles. If I had a time machine,i'd go back in a heartbeat to be with all my loved family and friends, most of them gone now. Funny how a song can trigger such a flood of memories.

  • I have been searching for this for so long. Then I decided to just try ..You're the reason why..and I got it!!!!!WoW!!!! So so beautiful...These songs today are unromantic and deny men and women the beauty of all this tenderness.respect and warmth.

  • the dells would have mashed this song lol

  • DREAM WONDERLAND !

  • I'm only 27 and I must say that there needs to be more songs like this! I would love to have lived during the 70's for the music.

  • Takes me all the way back. Bay area, San Francisco/Oakland Calif 1970's

  • I also remember checking the Ebonys out at the Uptown on Broad street in Phila. I think we used to get off on Dauphin on the Broad street line. I remember young ladies would run on the stage, grab and throughly kiss the lead singer! Especially if he sang falsetto! I said to my mother, "mommy that is what I want to be when I grow up!" I was only 10 or 11 at the time!

  • amerie sampled this

  • the remix

  • this song was nice-you had to be around back then to appreciate this song-i was 16 years old hanging out at the sub shop

  • This song is funny! The way that dude be screamin' and the other guy yelling BABY BABY BABY BABY!!! I can't take this song. The first time I heard it I was hysterical. But it's an awesome song!!!

  • it is kind of funny I never thought about it that way

  • Thank you. At least someone else sees there's a little humor in this song. But I find humor in many odd things ;-)

    Peace!

  • Peace be with you also. A sense of humor is so necessary for living this life. I've always liked to laugh.

  • This song popped in my mind and I found it here. For some reason, I remembered the screaming and the baby, baby, and the line "Im a happy guy, you're the reason why", vividly. All these years I hadn't thought about it that way. LOL. Quite funny it is. Such a beautiful lovesong. I guess most of us ladies would love to have the proper young man sing this song to us.

  • Yes, it would be nice to hear our husbands sing a love song to us. However if my husband starting screaming at the top of his lungs and yelling "Baby, baby, baby, baby" over and over again it would make me laugh just a little
