I've never really been a huge George Jones fan, but he's coming to my town in May. I just can't allow myself to miss seeing a legend perform in person! I just really started listening to his stuff, and I really like it!
lol, george you liar, new york isnt one of your fav towns...but you are such a legend, loved your book and your music. Strange that a lad from Coventry, England thats hasnt even been to U.S and A loves your music
@ 2: 04 till 2:22 they show producers should have featured (shown) the lead guitarist doing his stuff. Would have broke it up a bit, rather than just seeing ' watching a non- singing singer, lol.
@ProfessionalSouthern eh take off Randy Travis, George Strait and add Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Snow, Bob Wills, Gene Autry and a whole bunch of others to the "kings of country" Just not George Strait or Randy Travis. I respect both of their music but they aren't even in the same league and some others.
he use ta come to green field ohio and break in song on the sidewalk people came from all over the little town and block the streets to hear him. he had some band members who there family lived there
@TheDesiray ........Shoot! This song actually reminds of my own grandfather (Mother's side) who had a still down in his basement where he made Home-made Strawberry Wine every year for Christmas. It was more like "Strawberry Liquer......80%"
Willie Nelson helped make other people famous way before he became a star. He NEVER made claims to Nashville, in fact, That is how Willie became known as an OUTLAW in his profession. Fact is, Willie never had a problem with Nashville. Patsy Cline didn't have a problem with singing CRAZY either. Wonder how many times WILLIES songs have been covered by NASHVILLE'S wanna be's. Willie is still around, and around, and around. Just ask Johnny Cash's entire Family.
i saw him last weekend in Lexington Ky, Kenny Chesney brought him on stage and helped him sing 2 songs . brought chill bumps to my arms and a lot of tears to the fans around me. He stills sounds good but just didnt have the strength in his voice, it truley made the evening
Of course, I know that this is a C-F-G or 1, 4, 5 progression. I mean more than that or than that the song was written by J. P. Richardson, which I did not in fact know. I mean the instrumentation, the vocal phrasing, and the general values implied by the lyrics are characteristic of the late 1950's. This version was, according to Youtube, sung circa 1965. It is a product, putatively, of a country singer, or one who bills himself as such; however, country was no longer country when he did it.
@rlathbury The movie where this clip came from came out in 1965. The song, "white lightning" was 6 years old at that point. When it was written, many country artists were experimenting with Rockabilly due to Elvis' success. Sure, by 1965, country music had turned to the (overly-produced) Nashville Sound. This movie was sort of a relic at the time since many of the performances were of songs written in the late 50s. The movie was produced by the widow of country legend Hank Williams.
@Gatorrock787 : If I'm not mistake, Willie Nelson invented the Nashville Sound. That put him so at odds with many of Nashville's country music elite songwriters that he packed up in the late 60s or early 70s and left for Texas. There, he invented Outlaw music.
@Mufaso1000 I don't know anybody who says Willie Nelson "invented" the Nashville Sound. It was an unfortunate collaborative effort by Columbia and RCA to "modernize" country music. Chet Atkins at RCA was one of the real driving forces behind it. Quite possibly it was because of the dominance of the Nashville Sound that Willie moved to Texas.
@Gatorrock787 : Quite possibly true. I can't remember where or when I heard that Willie invented the Nashville Sound. I can understand Chet Atkins being behind it, though. I also heard that country music was losing alot of young listeners to rock and roll in the late 50s and early 60s.
Is it Chuck Berry revisited? Jerry Lee Lewis? I hear "Johnny B. Goode" and "Great Balls of Fire," and maybe some of Little Richard. Maybe this is country music, but it sounds awfully 1958 and tame. Nice, but derivative.
@rlathbury Being a rock 'n' roll expert, you should know this song is hardly derivative. It's a classic. It was written by J. P. Richardson, also known as the Big Bopper. It was George Jones' first #1 country hit in 1959. That's why it sounds "awfully 1958"... whatever that means. As a rock historian, you also know that Richardson died in the 1959 plane crash that also took the lives of Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens.
@rlathbury I'm pretty sure that's because just about all the hits of the time were written the same way with a I-IV-V progression and similar arrangements. The reason the Beatles were so big is because they didn't do that. They were different, and they did it better than any of the other different acts that had been around yet. And people act like all pop songs sounding the same is a new thing... People just like to complain about the current state of music, no matter the year.
Is it Chuck Berry revisited? Jerry Lee Lewis? I hear "Johnny B. Goode" and "Great Balls of Fire," and maybe some of Little Richard. Maybe this is country music, but it sounds awfully 1958 and tame. Nice, but derivative.
