  • excellent video!!!

  • at 1:30 im like WDF YOUR SB-900 CAN DO A FULL 360!!! and then i saw the little cut before that

  • Read the video description, detective.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 teehee

  • Fantastic video. Introduced me to the flash in a very easy to understand fashion. Looking forward to picking up my new speed-light. Thanks!

  • Hey, thanks a million for the great tutorial. I learned a lot from your simple yet terrific instructions. Will approach my flash photography with added interest/knowledge in the future.

  • When you're doing a 45 degree pan, you are actually spinning the flash-head 90 degrees... just thought you should know :) joking i read the description!

  • Oh, good, we was about to yell at you.

  • Great video!

  • When you say you're doing a 45 degree pan, you are spinning the flash-head 90 degrees (1/4 of a full circle). Just to let you know...

    Nice vid, though! (=

  • For the millionth time we have to say this.

    Read the video description.

  • when it's sideways that's a 90 degree pan.

  • Yes... Read the video description. It've been there for years now.

  • Great video. Very helpful since I am new with flash.

  • AWESOME GREAT VIDEO LEARNT A LOT

  • Great work

  • Hi, just wanted to you, you seem very experienced with SB-800, I have just bought one and first time i used it with D300s, flash goes off lightly 3 times n real flash burst happens...I have i explained myself, flash goes off 1 2 3....in a quick mode n real flash burst happens...how can i stop that 1 2 3 n just have 1 flash happen? what am I doing wrong?

  • You have Red Eye Reduction mode turned on, simply turn it off.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Thank you, all Good now

  • Thanks for uploading man. Your videow are very helpful to me and i love their artistic side too. Thanx

  • Great Music.

  • great tutorial! i learned a lot. i will be getting my sb-800 next week.

  • Great vids

  • Good vid...

I use D50 and I often take photos in Aperature Priority mode on camera...

I wonder when should I use TTL mode or AA mode?

Also in SB-800, I can set the aperature, should I set it everytime I shoot? Will it affect the pic or it's just a indicator?

    Thanks.

  • The iTTL and AA flash modes are basically two same things except AA keeps the neutral flash power the same for all apertures by in / decreasing the flash power output valves (for example, at F/2.8, lesser light and at F/8, more light). You can use either one that suits you the best.

No, you do not need to set the aperture on the flash because it is an automatic mode, the flash will recognize the aperture set on the camera then automatically sets the aperture by itself.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87

Thanks for the video. Personally which Mode you mostly recommend for indoor shoots for SB-900 (attached with nikon D300s + nikkor17-55mm lens)? it seems TTL or TTL/BL Modes are much easier to use as it just reads the information by itself and works.

  • For us, we use M most of the time, so the lighting stay even the whole photoshoot. TTL-BL for uncontrollable situations (i.e. weddings).

  • Great video! Very informative, music was extremely relaxing.

  • I cannot comprehend manuals and as someone commented, "you took the scary out of using my flash unit". Thanks for doing this. It is a great tutorial and very well put together. Love Coltrane :)

  • Wow! really takes the "scary" out of using my flash unit. While manual reading is helpful, seeing is believing.

Thanks so much for making this video -

  • GREAT VIDEO!!! I have a D200 with a nikon 18-200mm lens and when I am in aperture mode with the SB800 flash, my meter shows under exposure. Switch to shutter priority and the meter will zero out. Can you tell me why this is doing this. Thanks for any suggestions.

  • The answer is simply this... The SB-800 was in Auto Aperture (A or AA icon on LCD) and it will work only when you have the control of the aperture (in Aperture Priority Mode or Manual Mode) on the camera. The SB-800 will become haywire because you switched to Shutter Speed Priority Mode, which means you have to use other Modes on the SB-800. Please read your SB-800 User's Manual for further explantation.

  • Hi. I have a d200 and mount a nikon 18-200mm lens with the sb-800 flash, when I adjust the sb-800 menu it didn't show any GN mode like you displayed? is this normal? Thanks.

  • Yes, it is normal, simply do not tilt the flash head to positive degrees. Distance Priority uses the lens' focusing distance to measure the distance. When it it tilted, GN doesn't know what's the distance because the flash head and lens aren't parallel to each other.

GN only works at -7º tilt (tilted down for close-ups) and 0º tilt (straight).

  • Thank you so much for your help!

  • Thanks a million Lilkiwiguy87, you sure made my day. :-)

  • This is really helpful, thanks! I also love your music selection.

  • Thank you for this video - very helpful. I just bought the SB-900 and it's a BEAR to figure out. I ma not a professional photographer so all the adjustments are very hard to understand. I guess I will have to practice practice practice.

  • ...and you will have to read read read the SB-900 user's manual.

  • What's Macro Flash? I did a google, but it only showed links to Adobe Macromedia nubbins.

    Ta

    CW

  • Macro Flash is a speedlight that attaches to the front of lens when you do close-ups. Google this, Nikon R1C1.

  • Yo If I apply the flash toward it to the ceiling then the light bounce create amazing lighting effect is it important to keep on eye the ceiling color which must be clear white or just

ignore it whatever the color is ( other than white )

  • It *HAVE* to be solid white color.

If the ceiling is pink, the bounced light will be pink as well.

  • Two questions:

1 - is it possibile in our opinion to correct the color with RAW if you bounce off a quite yellow surface?

2 - I often find situations with yellow walls, do you think the green filter might help?

    Thanks

  • 1: Yes, you could adjust the colors but the background color will be different.

2: The blue tint from the flash + yellowish flash white balance + green gel filter delivers more neutral colors from the blue tint from fluorescent. With non-blue walls with green gel filter, it's not possible.

  • A wonderful video about using external flash. Good guidance tutorial for beginners too. Learned a few tips also. Ey...Joseph, credit me also for giving you the idea on this video?

    Hahaha, Kidding pal.

  • Nice tutorial! thanks!

  • Very good & clear detail about how to use the flash. Very soon I need to have flash I would go for the SB 600 or equivalent to Canon 430EX II but both don't have a built in bounce reflector card is that OK without it or just I need to modified as long as I have those reflector card.

  • 120-brightness cardboard white paper + tape (or rubber band) = magically a bounce card. :)

  • I would like to try it when I already have a flash Thanks!

  • this is very helpful thank you

  • thank you

  • As much as I love Nikon products, their manuals are sometimes oddly written. Good video.

  • The manual is very different because it is technical it doesn't tell you 'how to create image', instead, it tells you 'how to use it'. So, that's why I made this video, written in plain english for everyone to understand.
