Doesn't Hill Street have a distinct FEEL to it that I only get from this particular show? I had forgotten how incredibly convincing it was.
Maybe it's not that hard to do... but the way the camera in that scene sweeps through the room, catches reactions - it's so lively, it feels like it's done in one piece with several cameras...
Anyway you can instantly tell how Hill Street Blues is among that handful of shows that changed TV forever... and for the better.
though i wasn't old enough to watch Hill Street Blues when it first came on i now watch re-runs on cable where i live, and this show is so addictive. the characters of the show was definitely Belker, and I really think Barbara Bosson is a lot more attractive than Veronica Hamel
anyone else bothered by the MADDNESS of all the extras which is the norm now. Hollywood has always liked lots of people moving in the background but this didn't add to the realism.. just like on ER...
I agree with you. I work in a reasonably large precinct and I've never seen that many people at work at one time. Not that the show (or any show) was terribly realistic... for instance, patrol officers and detectives have seperate roll-calls, and are under different command structures/supervisors. etc etc
@darkwolfdv And my uncle was an inspector in the biggest police HQ in Canada for over 20 years and used to say that there was never a police drama that more realistically showed what life as a big city cop was like than Hill Street Blues. Guess it was busy in Toronto HQ.
@tyme4mike My Dad was 32years in New South Wales Police here in Australia. Dad loved Esterhaus but is favorite was Belker. He reminded dad of a Sergeant who ran the cells at Central my Dad wokred with. Bruce Weitz did a guest spot on General Hospital and I had the opportunity to meet him at GH Fan Club Weekend. I was over the moon to meet him and he gave me a Belker pic for my dad and signed it. I told him one of the stories dad told me about his sergeant. He agreed jus like Belker
@ciriel Michael Conrad was great as Sgt. Phil Esterhaus.
After he passed, I sent his widow a letter of condolence & a Bloom County strip which had Michael Binkley and Portnoy reflecting on the coming of 1984.
Binkley then said, "You know, in a silly sentimental way I'm really going to miss good ol' Sgt. Esterhaus. I really shall. He then looks at his watch & says, "It's 1984." Portnoy: "Let's...be careful out there." Mrs. Conrad sent me a note thanking me, saying she was deeply touched.
lol, I have a request as well. Bruce Weitz plays an undercover deli guy in a supermarket and a woman wants her meat fresh, really fresh. Weitz's final line in that exchange is fall down funny.
I wasn't aloud to stay up late enough to watch this with my mom so I would beg her to let me watch roll call and listen to the theme and then I would go to bed.
Have been thinking about it, but the time... Would hate keeping everyone hanging for an episode for months and months. Would have to be from 3rd season on, though. Anything from seasons 1 and 2 would be deleted.
If you ever find out...please let me know...I would like it also...I have season 1 & 2 on DVD, but they stopped making them, as sales were not high enough....that's what I was told.
Great onscreen chemistry, wow, what an experience. I loved this show. Thank you for sharing this and allowing me to go back and escape. I really enjoyed this clip.
Quintessential, high-class TV.

Robert Prosky was NO match for the talented Michael Conrad.

Do you have the episode where Hill and Renko drink tea laced with marijuana, and make that car stop?
