David is right on the money. Rock n roll has been neutered by sound men. There has to be a happy medium so that vocalists can still hear themselves but for God's sake the guitar and other instruments matter too.
The mentality that vocalists are the only ones that matter is soooo over the top.
Some of you guys obviously know how good David is; the rest seem to be fixated on equipment issues, which is understandable, but trivial. It's the ideas. Listen, boys. This is the best "unknown" known guitarist playing on the planet today. Every time I rave about DG only the hip players know who he is. I don't get the rest. I'd record every one of those licks he was just throwing off to the interviewer, analyze them , and use them. They're golden. Like him.
Very cool... Man feel ya on turning those amps up... It is a bad thing. I played Disney in July and they had a two Marshall's for me. My stage volume was so low and without in ears it's so hard to hear. I mean I get not wanting to cut people heads off but at the same time you really need to stand 15 rows back to hear the mix other wise all you hear are drums.
David is the shiznittle bang, however, if that is one of his songs. That needs to be put down. "Got a lil somthin thats not on the menu". Give me a break!
If you like David Grissom you should check out Sam Sliva and The Good out of Austin, TX. Grissom did all the lead work on their album and helped produce it...great stuff!
I play a PRS Custom 24, McCarty and a Santana III through a Genz Benz Black Pearl 30 2x12. I turn the amp so it faces ME, instead of the crowd. Then I can turn up, lean into the amp for sustain/feedback, and the FOH guys LOVE it! (Especially for outdoor shows.)
You get the volume and response wihout messing up the mix out front. The only downside is you don't get to advertise your amp! (I don't have an endorsement deal with anyone so it's not an issue for me.)
That was a really good yak between a pair of musos. Nice one fellas. What else can I say? Maybe save a few grand for a PRS, although an Epi does it. Love and health to everyone xxxxx
Awesome interview! I love DG. I love the quote about amps bleeding into mics is part of rock n roll. I've experienced the "amp in a box" with "in ears". It sux.
The opening lick he plays sounds totally Bluesbreakers-era Clapton.

The song at the beginning is called 'Loud Music' off his solo album by the same name. It's great, would highly recommend it.

Does anybody know if what he's playing in the first part is part of a song or if everything he's playing is just made up?

Lance is a fellow member of The Gear Page. Nice cat.
David is such a cool and unique player. Great chops and tone for miles. He's been like that for years.
David would sound great through a solid state Pignose amp while playing a $150 Squier guitar.
Nice interview Lance.
