@80sVidLover No,Al was never on TOTP as he was told that he wouldn't be invited unless YOTC was in the top 30 - unbelievably it only made it to no.31 ! Of course it was a top 10 song in the US.
Man this takes me back! I remember sitting in the back of my parents Malibu in the late '70's on our way to Cape Cod and this came on the radio so often! Classic... thanks for posting!
THIS is song CRAFTSMANSHIP! Brilliant arrangement, cryptic poetic lyrics, utterly brilliant musicianship, playing "for the song", no overt "look at me, I'm going to RIP a solo!" To me, all great songs are poems set to music. Al Stewart is the Jedi Master of THAT!
Thank you very much! This video brings back nostalgic memories of the '70s alright! Psychedelic jackets, bell bottoms and Beatles hair! Al looks like George Harrison's younger brother! The song is exotic and melodic with a spy-ful edge to it. Somehow the song reminds me of Casablanca with a Mata Hari type of woman. What'd you think? I've always love the song so nice to be able to SEE Al and co. perform it!
Thanks for this! I've been listening to and enjoying Al's music since the early 70s and I think I enjoy it more with each passing year. One thing that keeps impressing itself on me is what an amazing guitarist Tim Renwick is. Of course Peter White is too, and unfair as it may seem, I wish he'd get off the piano stool and PLAY THAT ELECTRIC GUITAR!!!
Ah! The Old Grey...bands could play in the 7sand 80s...and of course we had John Peel on the radio...such a guy..what a loss...hope he's spinning records and playing punk demos somewhere out there...
great song,Im from algeria and its remind me the moment when I was an officer on a commercial ship, its was my favorite song on board, and remind me a lot good and bad moment
Oh I just love this song!! This is about the movie "Casablanca" The year of this performance by Al Stewart was The Year of The Dragon. I have always loved Al Stewart's Music a lot. Thanks for posting this video!
Yes it is a great line. I think this song is about that movie "Casablanca". I absolutely love and adore the jacket Al Stewart is wearing. He is a cool, cool cat. TM

Which version do you guys like better: this one from OGWT or the one form Don Kirchner's Rock Concert?
Was AL ever on Top of the Pops and if so, anyone have the vid?
80sVidLover 1 year ago
@80sVidLover I ask about TOP because this TOP is the OGWT video, so it has me confused.

Al Stewart reached #7 in the USA with "Year of the Cat" in 1977. In 1978, Stewart hit the top-10 again with "Time Passages" which reached #8.
