Uses smaller-diameter bullet for lower recoil? The bullet's diameter has nothing to do with recoil. The recoil is decided by the amount of gunpowder, and the shell length is the factor that gives at least a hint of the recoil. For example, the NATO standard 7,62 cartridge is 7,62x51mm. The AK-47's cartridge is 7,62x39mm, the bullet diameter is exactly the same, but AK-47's recoil is lighter, because the shell contains less gunpowder.

@MrMayrakoira There are far, far, far more relevant factors that go into a gun's recoil besides "how much gunpowder is in the cartridge". It just so happens that the diameter is a deciding factor because the fatter cartridge displaces more air when it is fired. But I will say that the amount of gun powder is another factor, so following your logic the bigger cartridge usually uses more gunpowder; therefore making your statement redundant.
