Wish someone would have Channel 10's coverage of Hurricane Agnes with Jack and John Facenda. It was on here many moons ago. I remember the commerical for that Chevrolet dealership on Route 1 in Langhorne, Pennsylvania!
Wow does this bring back memories. I actually remember watching this very program and the Hickey tease too! LOL
For the time this format was very advanced and fast paced in everyway. When they started tinkering with it the cohesiveness that was so important went away. The folks at WPVI knew this secret with Action News.
If you knew Philly news you knew that Big Al (sports) dressed like this on purpose as it was part of his "character"! Sure it was a bit corney but folks immediately focused,
Totally...poke around on YouTube and see what passed for a nightly newscast in the smaller markets circa 1977. Horrible production values all around, but that's the way it was done back then.
But they were NOT horrible for the time and technology of the time.
Its so easy to sit in 2009 and say how horrible things were in 1977 but if you lived in 1977 we thought this stuff was cool. Of course things have advanced since then.
Today we are spoiled by the laziness that technology and years of practice from previous generations have left for us.
I knew Jack in the early 80's when he anchored the news for WLS (ABC affiliate) in Chicago. He was a terrific guy, nice as can be, with a helluva sense of humor and loved to sing with a beautiful voice. We used to have a few while practicing the "art of conversation" and warbling a few standards at a wonderful piano bar called Joann's (also sadly now gone).
Excuse me, he was IN the 70's when this was recorded? How could he have been "stuck" in a time when they were in the current moment? BTW they did get to see the 80's and some got to see the 90's too. They did see change.
Classic news clips with Jack Jones, Vince Leonard, and Al Meltzer. I had the pleasure of Meeting Jack Jones in Person before he passed in '90s, he was such a nice guy, RIP Jack Jones.
Jack looked like he was in a rush to get somewhere, seeing how he was already rising from the desk and undoing his mike only seconds before the fade-out...LOL
Yeah, I suppose he was prolly eager to get home after being cooped up in the studio all day...I also work in broadcasting and as much as I love my job, it doesn't stop me from, when it gets close to quitting time, counting down the secs until it arrives. :-)
Hell, Mort Kamins even said in a 1995 interview that he wasn't thrilled w/the then-groundbreaking addition of a woman to the EN team, following the 1977 hiring of Jessica Savitch.
hey do you by chance have or know how to get hold of the KYW eyewitness news promo from around late 1979/1980? its been drivin me nuts for years to see this again. it had real trippy like graphics and pictures and some awsome electro disco music..if you have this or can get hold of this pleaseeeeee let me know!

When I heard them say: "When is a massage parlor not a massage parlor?" I thought it was a riddle, such as "When is a door not a door?"

This is in Philadelphia. You can just imagine the sea of formica tops and shag carpeting that musta covered the sets of much smaller market news sets

Lol that guy in the orange looks thoroughly pissed. That music kicked ass. RIP Telesound.

Big Al (one in the orange) was very pissed off at the end of that newscast.
videonut33 3 years ago
Well he realizes he's stuck in the 70s wearing an orange sweater and in an entirely brown studio for life! The music is good though.

As much as I like Telesound's "Streets of Philadelphia," I wouldn't want to have to wait for the whole thing to play out every night either!
