They're both good units. I prefer the Heil just for the speed. It'll pack equally well to the leach. But for top speed, nothing beats a Garwood 700. You could almost Continuously load those. Can’t think of any MFG. today that’s even close in packer cycle speed.
I live in an area previously dominated by Leach as they owned the county contract. Most municipalities experienced more problems when the company sold to federal signal, and as a result, a lot of towns are getting powertraks and even mcneilus bodies, even though they cost thousands more.
trashratt...the 2r3 is pretty much the same as the 2r2 except it has a rounded body rather than a straight one. It packs the same as before. I love leach packers, I think they are the best. As for the truck, it is an Autocar low entry. Piece of crap!! Mack is the only truck for garbage collection.
Hey packerman....I know I love those leach trucks also...they are addictive. I used to work on them when I was a kid in Ontario! Squished a hopper full of appliances no problem! Cool packers I must admit. I am sorry to hear about the autocar....I have used them and they were..well different! Where do you work..what city?
I became a trash man for these reasons: to squish and wreck stuff while putting a huge smile on my face, to see if I could pack the shit out of a truck and blow off the walls, to have as much fun as possible while looking at chicks all day!
Can you imagine what kind of films like this might exist of say, a 1955 Heil Colectomatic vs. Gar Wood LP-200? Boggles the mind ! Who's best ? If everyone agreed, there would only be one RL on the market !
My two cents: The Heil 5000. 25 years old and still the best RL IMHO. Compound-curved hopper floor for strength, tortured-path packing throat for high compaction and variable angle blade travel for maximum cubes in the smallest tailgate dimensions. All this and no tracks or slides either :->
I work a Leach 2R3. It has a bigger hopper then the Heils and faster cycle then the 2R2's. However Leach packmasters are disapearing fast. I haven't see a new one in a long time in the Chicago area. I see more Heil PT's & Mcnielus.
I've been told the reason for not seeing as many Leach's around is because there is a year and a half waiting list since the Labrie takeover from federal signal.
Speed isnt everything i have been told by a commercial RL operator when the blade is on slow speed it packs a denser load (they run it on low speed in the wee hours of the morning to run the truck quieter.
Thats true, espically if your putting a lot of bin bags in the back. If the packer is slower, the bags burst so hence no more trapped air in bags, and a greater payload!
While the Leach 2R2 has a slower cycle time, it swallows about twice the load per cycle, so again, cycle time is not everything. The 2R2 has always had one of the largest hoppers around and it's packer opens up for a bigger bite than most.
I still miss the old 2R2's from back in the day. I remember watching one swallow a washer and dryer in one bite and then proceed to devour an entire bedroom of furniture in the next, just like is was nothing!
OK, but no one can tell me that the Heil has a stronger packer than the Leach. So, at the end of the day, how much of that time you saved with the faster cycle time amount to nothing because of an extra trip to the landfill?
I have used both packers and the 2r2 or 2r3 blows away any heil packer. Always has and always will! Are the engine speeds the same on both trucks? 2r2's were always slow, but the new 2r3's are much faster, in fact faster than any heil rear loader.
the heil power trak commercial seems a little bit stronger packer.

Those are both realy strong, and both are= but the leaches are slower.

@TrashMonkey29 i agree

You should see the new 2RIII produced by Labrie, 21 sec complete cycle time. The hopper sweep volume is bigger than the Heil...

to me this is a cheat cause of course the leach will loose cause its older than the heil

Great vid on comparing the packing cycles on both trucks! But I have to go with the Leach!

Agreed .. .. Leach is WAY better than the NewWay packers, I have driven both a Leach 2R3 before and it works great

How does the Leach 2r2 and2r3 compare to Loadmasters?
georgewuzheer 4 years ago
I have used both and currently drive a 2005 leach 2r3. There is nothing better than a leach! trust me!

new way packers are the worst, i agree the leach is fantastic, ive crammed some huge loads on it, even packing just in the hopper.
bryan1282 3 years ago
the packing cycle on the leach 2R2 is slower than the heil power trak

What is wrong with Leach Garbage Trucks?
I think the older ones are better than the newer ones because they are somewhat unique in there own special way ....

I drive one of the last 2R3's to be built before they shut down in 2005.

Hey man, do you like the New 2R111's...or are they junk? What make truck, Volvo, Mack, Ford etc...????

When I operated my old Mack/leech, we'd fold old washers and dryers like paper. Lots o' fun

I like both manufacturers, but I think the Leach packer pistons are far more capable of compacting.

Mcnielus has the best rearloader all around but if i had to pick between the heil and leach it would be the leach without a question.
