I am just in awe of this video! You can truly tell the secondary announcer stammered in absolute disbelief as he couldn't seem to think of what to say....
...and yet, couldn't have said it any better! "Look at Mills! Look at Mills!!!!"
1964 Tokyo Olympics. "Mills is coming on!, Mills is coming on!"" one of the great calls in sports history. The greatest upset in track and field history. A tremendous accomplishment indeed!
Wow. I'm awestruck each time I see this video. One of the most tremendous kicks I've ever seen; he makes the other finishing runners look like they're stuck in mud.
I've watched this many time and love it more each time. One of the greatest human stories of our time. God bless you Billy Mills. I remember hearing it in a delayed program on the radio. I din't know how won and it was like I ran the race with him. Yes, he does help kids --- non-profit.
I have seen this over 10 times and every time I cry. Mills was saying to himself the whole time: i can win. I can win. I can STILL win. He used positive imagery and imagined a native american (Indian -- as he would say) winning the race. Wow! Love this. Just emailed it to all my friends.
I agree, watching that devastating kick has the same effect on me every time. What a great race for Billy, and boy did those commentators get caught up in it. I can win!
Me too. The emotion that took over from the commentators is something you just don't hear anymore. I don't think that any other American won a medal in the 10K meters before Mills, and none has won a medal in the 10K meters since Mills.
Running Brave was a great movie about Billy mills and his life story. My dad got to meet him once in Needles California Mohave GYM can't remember the year he meet him Igotta ask him when I get a chance.

How times have changed - for the better in this case. It was ridiculous how Mills, Clarke & Gammoudi had to run around the lapped athletes1

What a kick! He was clearly interfered with by the jerk who took second on that last lap. The idiot deserved to lose.
