It would have been a great engine, if the Germans who designed it made it and used it !!!. The British army found all the plans and gave them to BRM in the hope they would win with it, but it was a bit to advanced for the UK engineers at the time. The recording is form the book In to the red by Nick mason, well worth getting a copy.
@beauknowz Harmonics between the intake stacks and the exhaust note. Sort of like when 2 trumpets are played one at 440 Hz and the other at 1320 Hz. The intake the higher note because the intake stacks are shorter and the exhaust the lower note as it's longer. A simplistic explanation and the sound is much more complex but it certainly is "music to the ears". The intake sound is projected more forward and is much louder when the car is heading toward the observer. 16 intake stacks?
Makes me blub like a baby - freakin' unbelievable that a man-made machine can bring a grown man to tears.............thank god this engine was built - I don't care how unreliable it was - I might use this at my funeral!!!!!!!!!
@00willrocks00 I agree 100% with your comments. I have this sound on a cd and I play it in a room with surround sound, Just unbelieveable !! And the merlin too ! Another engine sound I like is the 12V71 Detroit diesel.
I have listened to this overy the last several years and I STILL feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. So much music out of 90cid Wonderful.
That is 2- 1.5 litre motors grafted together. So it's 3 litres. The cutting out you hear is the driver's foot bouncing on the throttle. Imagine the spring tension of 16 throttle-bodies!
@seely1320 Actually this is a single 1.5 litre supercharged engine. Only naturally aspirated engines were allowed to have 3.0 L by the regultaions of the time.
This engine revs to about 12k and is very powerful. It got a bad rep due to reliability issues, but JM Fangio said this was the greatest F1 car ever made, the most rewarding to drive
When you consider this engine was 1.5 liters .. somewhat smaller than a Honda Civic .. and 16 cylinders, it is indeed a matchless sound. If I am not mistaken, this car belongs to Nick Mason, Pink Floyd's drummer. The "cutting out" you hear is indeed just that .. they suspected ignition problems .. 1950 technology was hardly up to 12,000 rpm.
People who aren't into engines or cars just don't get it. All they hear is noise. What I hear makes me gut sink and my heart beat fast and my mind LUST with ENVY because I WANT IT! How frustrating it is to be surrounded by people who just don't get it. They think it's a fad, a phase, something people grow out of. Well, I'm 30 years old and I'm more crazy about automotive stuff now than EVER. True enthusiasts are enthusiasts until death. I'm gonna go drive the hell out of my Mustang now..
@xilix You are absolutely right. For some, it might be a passing phase, but I'm old enough to be your grandad, and it's never left me!
I am in Ireland, and drive a 1977 Reliant Scimitar GTE, which I've named THOR, after the god of thunder, because of the enormous noise it makes. I saw, and heard the BRM at Silverstone, as a boy, around 1950-51, and I've never forgotten it! Don't feel frustrated by others' lack of appreciation- Enjoy your Mustang!!
Having heard one of these several times in real life, I can tell you this.
This sounds good, but hearing it in real life is one of the worlds great experiences. I will always remember the first time i heard this car, It was saturday at the festival of speed. When they fired this baby up on the start line, you couldn;t think, and circa 100,00 heads all turned towards it, as if to say WTF is that! Louder than anything you have ever heard and sets the hairs on your neck standing to attention
While wonderful in all respects, the BRM engines were unreliable...I wish someone would build one using todays manufacturing tech and metalurgy. It would be Awesome.
It sounds even better than the Auto Union Type C. It's the higher revs. I wonder if there are women out there who feel the same emotion men feel when hearing this. If so, she should be my future wife. Pure audioporn this is.
@MrSavantas Sorry to say this but women don't find interest in this.Only thing matters to them is how the car looks, how fast is it,how expensive is it.This is something that only MEN can understand!
@andydiscovery YYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! this is the best comment someone could make for a sound like this... kittens for fuel!... that sound as mean as the freaking engine!!!
@MudBarf well I challenge you to find a video of the car running on a track, let's see if you keep thinking it's that easy to put a video of something like this on Youtube
@MudBarf Not others silly, I said you. I know there's videos out there, my point is it's not that easy to find footage of the car running on a track other than the ones that are already out there, do you see where I'm going? Besides, this is freaking amazing, even without the video. Just enjoy it!
I think the driver is lost, or perhaps he stopped to sort out the unbelievably irritating fuel starvation, does anybody know how to fix proper engines anymore??
2:26 sends bloddy chills down my spine! It's like an orgasm to the ears!

Is that hi-pitch sound as the car approaches the intack stacks? .40-.50, 2:24-2:34, 4:00-4:10, etc., amazing, reminds me of a P-51 Mustang!

This is from the book that he did called Into The Red where he tested all of his old race cars and recorded their engine notes. amazing!
