i'm not gonna lie though. derek gave dream theater something else. he may not have been the most talented but i love his style. jordan rudess just gets old after a while
Tony left the band before Quantum came out to tour with Steve Vai but I believe he will be returning for the new Planet X album, I'm soooo happy he's back!!!!
I'm not saying who's a better musician. I'm just saying that tony was involved in the more collective songs, instead of songs like this one which are just Virgil Donati showcasing.
Virgil writes most of the material for Planet X, and if you don't realise how good they are then you still have a lot to begin to learn and understand :)
Then you look at the insane technical and mathematical stuff these guys do. They're progressive, which is among the hardest types of music to play, if not the hardest.
Please, tell us what kind of group do you think Virgil Donati should be in? I'm sure we'd all love to know.
some people call this uninspired, too technical, thus unemotional. My answer to them is always 'then you never played an instrument in your entire life". This is THE perfection. I rate them higher than Spiral Architect - it all makes so much sense and even as complex as it is, it is very, very likable and it makes one move. Who else can do that with such kind of music but genious? Spiral Arch. has the best one minute of music I've ever heard, though (my personal opinion)
Exactly! That's exactly the mindset most of the music world needs to adopt.
It's hard to be in a progressive group and write impressively technical stuff while still being able to create emotions and, as you said, "make one move." These guys are gods among men.
and the unison part at the end of Cloud Constructor is one of the most if not THE most awesome, touching, brutal and inspiring, tight and well played unisons I've ever heard
@PaganWarDrummer i used think i knew what these guys were doing, but i'm not so sure anymore! their music keeps getting more complex as the years go by! this is music that aliens listen to! LOVE THESE GUYS!
@PaganWarDrummer also latin jazz, and technical death metal, these are my top 3 music genres even i listen about every music i can from every place in the world. arabic music is also astonishing.
Har har. I'd be okay with it, but Donati's got this thing going on where any music project he's in has to be about him, and that's not what Dream Theater is about. That said, I'm sure the others could keep that part of him under control.
yeah. i love Donati and i'd ADORE to see him write dream theater drum tracks to see what would happen, but i agree, i don't think it would work very well.
TBH i think that portnoy isn't the best drummer out there. i really really like virgil, just cuz of the way he plays. hah.
i'd be cool for mangini, or even marco minneman. only problem with marco is that i don't think he'd get along well with the rest of the group tbh. if virgil or mike mangini joins them, i'd love to see them write better drum tracks haha.
My friend matt dahl is going to berklee this year. i told him to look out for mike and to meet him if he could.
god damn virgil! He's so insanely good...independence out the ass...this is the kind of drum part you have to study just to know what the hell he's playing
Can totally get the Dream Theater influence in Planet X's work

@PaganWarDrummer actually, Virgil describes the music as Heavy Fusion. It definitely contains, jazz, rock, and progressive elements in it.

Same as On the Virg, I know. It's progressive, which is an umbrella term for about a thousand different microgenres.
