According to the book The Wrecking Crew by Kent Hartman which follows a group of LA studio musicians thru the 60's,70's and 80's the song was recorded in in 1972 in LA using the same musicians that played on sound of silence" and bridge over yada,yada.as well as many beach boys tunes.According to Simon it was concieved in a chinese restaurant after seeing a dish comprised of both chicken and egg on the menu.hence mother and child.

hey stephen, d song may be a response to Jimmy Cliff's song "vietnam", but only in terms of the reggae factor. it is important 2 note that d song only got itz name fom a Chinese dish, but it has nothing 2do with Oriental cuisine. d truth iz that Paul wrote d song in memory of his deceased dog. SERIOUSLY. Datz why itz so hard 2 understand wat d song meant. Oddly, Paul McCartney's song "Jet" iz another dog dedicated song. CHECK IT OUT.

Paul Simon is a great songwriter....his songs always have deep meaning and poetic.

Simon wrote this in response to the Jimmy Cliff song "Vietnam;" a song about a mother receiving a letter about her son's death on the battlefield. Simon recorded this song in Jamaica using Cliff's musicians, hence the very authentic sound. Also, the name of the song is a Chinese food dish with chicken and egg.
