how bad are the slowdowns with an iphone 3g? i had backgrounder on my old ipod touch and it really slowed down and cause a lot of crashes...

@ooogPatrick crashes come from running out of RAM on your phone...

The slowness oh your phone is completely dependent on how much resources the particular program that is backgrounded is using...

for instance

if you have the "Maps" application running...you are pulling data, as well as GPS information.. and will likely slow down the phone...

if you are running the facebook application... you are pulling data incremently.. and as a result will likely not slow down the phone enough to notice.

it has now and i dont think the backgrounder has been updated to work with 3GS because when you hold the home button the voice control pops up

I have a 3gs with backgrounder its awesome no bugs so far

the palm pre does have multitasking, however the palm is limited to 8 gb as opposed to 16 gb...runs a proprietary non-expandable OS, has a very small and clunky QWERTY keyboard, has a smaller screen by 0.4"

the iphone runs at a clock speed of 620Mhz where as the palm pre runs at a mere 400Mhz

so we can talk specifications all night long...I promise you, the palm pre (although brand new) has little on the iphone 3g

Wrong clock speed on the iPhone. The cpu is a 620mhz cpu, but it is severely underclocked to a speed of 412mhz

Okay well the iphone automatically shuts down network activity in order to reduce battery life consumption...what you need to do is download insomnia, so that the iphone will keep it's network connection on, while the phone is on standby :-)

Ok I am having a tough time with backgrounder and AIM, I would get it to work and you'd be able to get IM's after it goes to sleep...but after 20 mins of logged in and trying to get AIM it automatically signs off even with Backgrounder turned on...any have this problem? any way to fix this problem?

Definitely one of the better jailbroken apps. My only complaint is not all apps give red notification balls on top of the icon while in the background (ie: new fring message won't show a visual notification on its icon). I have found Palringo does show said notifications but only for NEW conversations so it's my msgr.

I still carry around my N95 for skype calls as it is far superior, it uses my carrier's skype service which places the call then connects me over the cell network.
