It's about Amu, a (rather mature) 5th grader. At school she has a "cool and spicy", cold personality, which makes her kinda unapproachable. But in reality she's a shy girl who wants to be cute. She then wishes that she can be cute and friendly, and the next day she sees chibi fairy versions (called shugo chara) of the kind of person she wants to be.
The story then focuses on her protecting other people's shugo chara from Easter. Easter is a big company that wants to use other people's shugo chara to find the embryo (which can grant any wish).
The show is a lot better than I described it. The main character is surprisingly likable, there's a really hot guy, and they talk a lot about reaching your dreams. You should check it out.

In the second season, she's a 7th grader, while he's a 12th grader.
In the first season, she's a 6th grader (elementary) while he's an 11th grader.
