  • I know it was a long time ago, but I noticed someone talking about modulation. Modulation has nothing to do with tempo or time signature. It is a key change. A key change that changes the tonic is a modulation, i.e. C major to A minor, a key change to the parrallel minor or major is a mutation, i.e. C major to C minor. I agree this is a little fast for me. It seems if the performer took a second to breathe he would fall behind. Give it some room to breathe or it starts to feel out of control.

  • What I think is that this is by far the best guitar arrangement of this piece that I've ever heard.

  • It seems to me that everyone says this is too fast or a bit rushed. I don't know much about jazz or classical music, but, I usually jam to some metal which makes me feel right at home with the the pace, tempo, and whatever else you'd like to call it. I'm actually interested in learning it as well.

I have the score in standard notation, tab, an annotated version with detailed performance instructions, and an annotated score with the instructions plus embedded videos.     Mr. Niedt correctly plays it very fast. Otherwise, this tune would be 'flat' on classical guitar.

  • jprjr3 got it right.. the phrasing problem caused by plucking each note is faulty.. sorry, but it is.. listen to troublecleff has a version which really interprets this tune effortlessly; and in my opinion much more fluidly... easier to listen to... there's just no swing in this thing..j

    Granted, as dudeman before me said, it's a little rushed at times, but this is the ONLY guitar version of this i can find that really gets that groovy swing feeling going. I gotta say this is my favorite guitar version. Keep up the good work, and please repost a newer version soon (maybe play with a metronome next time ; ) )

    Technically superior, but it sounds about two (2) beats too fast. Slightly hurried, as if nervous, making too sure to be perfect.

    The phrasing is excellent, and the execution is flawless.

    (2nd listen)

    Outstanding dynamic control. Pace, however, takes away from the richness of emotional appreciation. The ear wants to catch-up, vs. ride along. Stressed tempo wants to impress, not allowing the listener to fully relax.

    i.e. groove.

    Overall: Very good. Kudos.

    The tempo is slower on troubleclef's version, but it is very appealing.  Most romantic. Squeaks do not take away from the robust, yet concise, emotion that is portrayed in his rendition. Thanks, for the reference!

    I need not be a chef to know what tastes good.

    In comments below, I did view another musician play this piece, and critiqued that performance. It too, in its execution was very good, albeit slightly slower, and more romantic. I complemented this piece, not trashing it.

    I shown no bias for one performance vs. another.

    Still, this rendition was outstanding.

  • @4u2b1ib12 i liked ur comment, and i kinda agree with most of it, but I do want to point out Brubeck plays Take Five in nearly all live versions that i've heard a little "too fast"... which just so happens to be nearly the identical pace which this here Mr. Niedt pulled off.

    So even though you're right in saying it'd groove way more just by slowing it down, I guess I can understand Niedt's intent..

    Agreed! Paul Desmond played it far smoother, without the staccato strike.

    Saxophone pads vs. fingernails, they make that "click-strike," on the guitar, present the progression as faster, hurried, tense.

  • I do have a comment, a suggestion.

    You did a very good job, I wish I could play that song.

    Now the suggestion, At the very beginning, on that fist run, you, like many other people, played by plucking each note individually. That makes the timing, and the sound, kind of awkward. Don't you think hammer ons and pull offs would flow better?

  • Apology accepted..I just get defensive because a lot of people have been making bad comments about this video when Doug is one of the world's finest guitarists. There are a lot of idiots on youtube that don't understand different time signatures or different renditions songs.

  • nicely done!!!! only thing I can point out is the timing modulates faster and slower (although very slightly) ... but hey, playing that tune on your own can't be easy by any means.

  • Modulates is a term which denotes a change in time signature. He is gradually speeding up, not modulating.

  • Doug16, you are absolutely right. I was only using the term to show a variation in time but I no idea that "modulates" has its own meaning with respect to music ... interesting.
