I've found padlocks to be quite cumbersome cause I always needed a third hand to hold the damned lock. Often what I would do is just take a hammer and chisel, and chisel off the little stubs on the bottom of the lock, and disassemble the lock. Reverse engineering at it's finest.

I have not seen a flat key, pin tumbler cylinder lock in use for a good 10-15 years now. I don't think you can even get an insurance if you are using one of those. Why are those still used in the US? I mean some of those you don't even need to pick, just use lock bumping.

@jessica101510ily The other piece is called a "Tension Wrench or Tension Tool." It can actually be any small straight piece of metal that fits into the lock. Its function is to turn the lock cylinder once the lock is picked with the other tool.. That's why it's funny on tv or in movies when you see someone pick a lock with only one tool as it doesn't work that way (except for very simple locks like some bathroom door locks, etc). For most locks you NEED two tools (with a few exceptions).
