Art21 has several videos of him in his studio. He may have branched out in his more recent work, I'm not sure, but for this video, it's all photographs of charcoal drawings put together as stop-motion.
@jackbussell it's not computer animation it is animated drawing - also i don't think his technique is up for evaluation by ... who are you by the way? if you wanted to buy the copyrighted set of 8 films it would cost you $500,000
@jackbussell 3D computer animations are done by teams of people with software tricks... this kind of work takes months to make just a few minutes - why not check out some of his fully drawn stop frames like - Felix in Exile
Kentridge's philosophy is current and globally relevant. HIs method of communicating this philosophy is exemplary; hence his status in the art-world. Simplicity underlies the complexity of the process and thinking behind it. A key influence on me and my fourth James Joyce Dubliner's Contemporary Contextualisation. First researched and responded to on youtube. Thank you Mr. Kentridge.
an X - acto knife is great for cutting away the smudged parts, especially if you like using graphite. Another way is if you use a gum art eraser; it rubs off into little bits and does not smudge or become dull easily like a white magic eraser. Also, my personal favorite is the kneaded eraser, simply stretch it out to clean and you can erase again!
@littletwitchy I think he' is copying some real footage with a software like "ARTRAGE" and then erasing with a wet sponge to give the "dirt" effects.. i could be wrong anyway, there are many ways to obtain this...
@AlanUno you need to watch the documentaries about this artist and how he works. he is not a computer graphics animator he is a traditional artist. he has a camera with a shutter button on a lead set up in front of a wall covered in paper, which he draws on with charcoal and photographs every change he makes as one frame - he erases lightly leaving a trace of the mark behind - a technique sometimes used in drawing but rarely in animation and what makes his style unique and influential
@AlegriasGallery I'm sure that he could obtain a similar effect by using some good software, in shortest time...but i'm always fascinated by "old style" artists
verry intersting the auromatical writting. how you can watch on the movie alpswissart upstairs i did send you a video from mechanical spiders design by answer.

Sorry, I only dabble in art just to experiment; it's actually very fun to play around with, especially with this type of style.

No one gets the soul of Industrialization better than Kentridge. A true son of Marx at his most critical and least utopian.

Yes if you have seen any of his studio films you would see that he draws shoots erases and draws the next frame or movement.

Waitaminute folks...I appreciate the richness of his charcoals. I do.
BUT the guy is clearly tracing and copying. The people are barely moving. I mean really.
