Continuation of my comment- When several inmates were swinging axes to cut down a tree they had to keep a precise rhythm so that the axes didn't strike each other, thus the song providing that rhythm had to be more precise in rhythmic form than the songs for swinging hoes in the crop fields. I spent a lot of time at Retrieve through the '60s & into the early '70s. In the evenings some of the black inmates sang Gospel & Blues. Retrieve was a tough place to be an inmate in those days.

If you break your axe handle at Eastham they give you one with a metal handle. Ouch! And stay upwind of the burning brush piles that have poison oak on them. I try to engage in intelligent dialog without the mudslinging. Bottom line is that any time in history that a group is systemically oppressed and denied basics civic equality you're going to have problems. When the Romans civilized the anglo saxons it was the same except for the rRomans prided themselves on giving conquered peoples civic equality under Roman law. an essential contractor service. The
inmates called Retrieve "The Burnin' Hell".
Most inmates were African-American &
