This is what spoils music these days. Does nobody notice that those of us who play live enjoy all sorts of music when it is well-played. Hendrix appreciated professionalism and looked beyond the "manufactured" hype, as did Mike Nesmith.
It was a time in history and the music can take you back to a simpler time. The Monkeys and Hendrix can both do this. However, there is no comparison when it comes to playing guitar. No one in his day could play anywhere near Jimmy Hendrix. That fuzz box was one of many tools used by a musical genesis.
Actually the Monkees were the better band although explaining that in detail would take some doing. Take away the sound effects on Hendrix's guitar playing and all of a sudden it wouldn't sound nearly as good. If you have ever played an electric guitar with and without a fuzz tone you know what I mean, without much effort with the fuzz tone you can make a guitar sound pretty good even if the playing isn't so hot. Michael Nesmith was a far better guitarist than Hendrix.
@MrBEB123 You don't. you must be have never heard most of Hendrix's music to say that without fuzz he doesn't sound good. it would honestly suprise me if you knew anything substantial about guitar

Great video. Most comments here, miss the mark. In the first place, The Monkees were almost solely for sweet girls and boys, while the Experience was a band for tremendous acid rock, drugs, and wild playing. .Remember, I am from Seattle and we like Jimi very much. To compare Jimi/ Monkees, with even Herman's Hermits/ The Who is so, so different. It was simply a publicity stunt, and Jimi left the tour after about 7 gigs. Kids were visibly upset, and their parents were outraged at this tour.
@bozobingbox That's funny. For some reason the band Curved Air came into my head today. I was thinking about my favorite drummers. Stewart Copeland from the Police used to be with Curved Air.
The Monkees were a great 60s act. they were as uch part of the psychedelic love movement as anyone else at the time, and the music still holds strong to this day.
I think the reason people dislike the Monkees is the similarity to the Beatles but there is room music in you life, if you don't like a band, so be it. Sure Beatles are the most influential group ever but so is Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Led zeppelin etc.. The Monkees were about fun, plain and simple. so enjoy them.
I am sure they got along. Jimi Hendrix was a kind person, and so were the Monkees, it was all about peace back then and they were very cool. Still, Hendrix and his band were much more involved in being musicians if that makes sense. Nobody touched the level of skill Hendrix had with the guitar.
@Malicension They didn't really get a chance to be upstaged because the little Monkees fans booed Jimi offstage every night until he quit the tour. Besides, it was The Monkees who saw what a talent Jimi was and had the good sense to sign him to the tour. The Monkees were what they were, but they were a fun garage band that had a show. I don't get why there is so much hate for what was just a fun group.
@VelvetCyberpunk agreed, jimi and the monkees would jam in their hotel rooms after the concerts from what ive read and they totally had a blast together even though Jimi opening up for them was very short lived.
@VelvetCyberpunk yeah...they were not a garage band...they auditioned for the tv show...that's why alot of boobs never gave them credit...they had great songwriters in the beginning, but their talents soon developed and they began to write songs and play concerts...iknow! i've played with them 76'..djbh and alot of solo show with davey or just micky...if you had to give no credit to bands that hired players from auditions...well...now i'm ranting..sorry, peace
@ricrefrat I love The Monkees and have to agree that they never got a lot credit for getting better. Sure, in the beginning they were a pop band. So were The Beatles and Rolling Stones. The only difference is that The Monkees were put together. But, until today's groups that are put together, The Monkees branched out and made music that is still great today. N'Stink and The Backdoor Boys could have taken a lesson from The Monkees on originality and how to write worthwhile songs.
@ricrefrat by "garage band" I meant that they weren't as good as a band who formed and worked together and developed their sound, they were just sort of lumped together by casting. They sounded good for being thrown together to do a tv show, but not Beatles, or Rolling Stones level good. I know how they got started, and probably know more about them than most of the people posting here. I also know that they tightened up later on and were pretty damned good after a while.
Respond to this video.Davey Jones was on the Ed Sullivan Show the first time the Beatles appeared. He did a song from the play Oliver Twist I believe.
Why are people hating on The Monkees. Jimi Hendrix actually was friends with them. This sound strange to people these days because music is so commercialized and they only act in the last 30 years have been package to tour with the same type of music. Back then groups would tour with other acts that you would never think are in the same genre. Black Sabbath one time opened for an folk musician, though I can't remember who it was. Anyways, the Monkees actually have good music.
@bat115 I don't mean to sound old, and maybe I am, but really. Kids these days. They don't know there history. I'm only in my early 30s and I know this part of history about Jimi Hendrix and music. Kids that grew up with cell phones and the Internet get surprised when the read about stuff like this or someone disagrees with them. And what is their immediate answer? "F@$# so and so..." or "so and so sucks" Boy, and I thought my generation was ignorant and bad.
@fatcatbuzz I totally agree. I work with some 20-somethings and their musical knowledge goes as far back as 90's grunge. To just be oblivious to anything made prior to that is just plain ignorant as you said. I wasn't old enough to experience the 60's firsthand, but there were some phenomenal bands out then.
@eartant I think the thing that cracks me up is how many people say, "I miss the 90s," though they were born in the late 80s or 90s themselves. Sure, The Monkees were put together, but so were other bands. Bands like, I don't know, The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The other difference between The Monkees and bands that are put together these days is that The Monkees had some good music and talent. The thing about living with out the Internet back in the day is we got our information from books.
@Mikemaniax I believe it. A lot of people these days that didn't grow up in that era (well, neither did I, but I know how to open up a history book) don't realize that bands with different styles use to be packaged on tour together many times. It's not like todays shows were most tours are done with bands playing the same style of music. Things were different back in the 60s and 70s. Just look at Monterey and Woodstock. The closest my generation comes is Lollapalooza, Reading and T In The Park.
@fatcatbuzz - those guys were just looking for a paying gig- mostly great songwriting, played by studio players- people hate because they want to hate something & nothing anybody can do about that- I wish Hendrix would've been around a while- he was with the Isley Bros I think, wasn't he?
Yes, I heard about this story too. Apparently The Monkees were trying to expand musically and bring new sounds to their audience, as well as be taken seriously as a legit band rather than TV stars. So they brought in Jimi Hendrix, a serious and legit artist, on board to tour with them. But the teen girls weren't trying to hear the guitar god rule their world yet. I'm sure these same now middle-aged women are kicking themselves today for doing that though, haha!
Why is it so hard to find live stuff from the monkees from the 60's? I know you can get their reunion stuff from the 80's and 90's but it just aint the same. I realize they spent more time in the actors studio than the stage, but they DID play live. Contrary to popular beleif they COULD play instruments.
remember this was before Hendrix was famous. I wonder if any of his performances were recorded from the monkess tour? Would be funny to hear the teenage girls screaming Davy
That is just so weird that someone thought that Jimi Hendrix and the Monkees would appeal to the same fanbase back then. But whatever, both are great.
Does anyone know if Jimi opened for the Monkeys at Boston Garden, late July early August 1967?? I had just turned ten. This friend of mine got me tickets. His mom was going to drive us.
