I have just completed a marathon of watching ur videos. OMG loooove them. I can relate to you a lot. Asian, grew up in Asia, came to UK to study,did law at uni and then became a Barrister,thought thats what I wanted but actually deep down- it was to make my parents happy ( although my Dad preferred me to do Medicine). As not only a" Western" but an American living in the country side, a lot of kids stay on to work the family farms but i also believe and this is my opinion, you were not born to please other people and eventually your elders will pass away. Having respect for your parents and them being part of your life is a given, but you always have to remember you have desires and dreams. You can't let life pass you up....your else you'll end up bitter.
i know exactly what you mean when you say western people often think that they can live their life without being effected by their parents. i come from a conservative culture and i can understand the pressure to please your parents.
But when you said you are afraid you won't succeed, i just wanted to point out that if you're perfect capable of succeeding in an area you don't even like, you will definitely succeed in something you love.
You can still follow your dreams!! It makes me so sad to hear that. Life has a way of levelling itself out. Do what makes you happy!! I think so often we forget this, i know I can myself.
your parents won't be living your life, girl. don't do what they want JUST because they want it. make sure you want it too, because YOU'LL be the unhappy one and they won't be able to do anything about it. :) you don't want to regret what you did with your life. your parents had their life, you have yours. take control of it. have the courage to take risks and do what you want with your life.

as for your weight people should not go against the norm to determine if they are size is acceptable. i think most people know their natural body weight i think i think as long as your dress in a way that compliments your figure and your feel comfortable then there is no problem
i sorry to hear that you are studying something you dont like. i have been a slightly similar situation when i didnt want to study a course but was encouraged to do so because i was half way through . but i understand you when you say to respect your parent opinion no matter how you are because they mean well but sometimes they should come to a compromise.
I love your honesty! I hope that you start to enjoy your study, or start doing something you do like. Because it must suck to do something, your heart isn't into. I just hope you find some pleasure in your study!

I just wanna say that I am entering into 3rd year for my law degree. I don't hate it but.. I don't like it either!! It's true that my parents didn't put any pressure on me but I know that this is what they want. So basically I did it for my parents especially my father, he's a lawyer and none of my two sisters have chosen to follow this way so i kind of feel obligated.. So yeah! I did it to please my parents..

I cried watching this, because up until a few months ago I was in the same position but with Pharmacy. I'm starting Accounting and Finance in September and I am so relieved I told my parents I was unhappy doing Pharmacy. I got a BS in Business but I really wanted to study History/Western Civilization and was also considering law. I got married in my twenties to a kind and very hard working professional man who is also cute and everything worked out. I have no regrets and you should not have any too :) U will do great in your Journalism career and law will definitely be a good "friend" <3

This might sound wierd, but even if you hate studying law, I still think that knowing the law puts you in a really strong position. I think no matter what job you end up doing, really knowing your rights and knowing what people can and cannot do means that no-one else is going to be able to take advantage of you, particularly with stuff like employment and money. My sister studied law, and even though she's not a lawyer if I ever need any advice on legal issues, she can always help me out.
I'm just curious. I know it seems like a rude question, but i'm just honestly curious: is there a reason why your family lives in hong kong? is there like some cool story? or do they just like the hong kong atmosphere? :D and i love your tattoo story, it's inspiring in a way :)

it's the same with any prejudice - to actually get rid of it society has to do more than accept that someone is different, they have to stop realising that the person is anything but normal
Saying "I admire you for wearing suchandsuch clothes when you're a bigger girl" should sound as out of place as saying "I admire you for wearing a ponytail when you're a brunette"

I get comments on my size all the time as well. I am a short girl and I look a lot younger than what I am. I hate hearing about it too!! I am so glad that you said that. People generally dont see a massive deal in a girl being smaller; but for me it's not nice and I have to hear about it all the time. Sometimes I even avoid certain social situations when I feel that my age or younger look might become an issue.

I do as well enjoy your videos and I really like you. . . but I was a bit offended when you said that "Western Teens" don respect their parents or their wishes. I firmly believe that yes it's important for your parents to want to see the best in you, but idt they would want their child or children to be miserable. I love my single mother and would do anything for her, but doing something that makes me unhappy for the rest of my life is a no. I respect my mother but I what makes me happy as well.

your parents won't be living your life, girl. don't do what they want JUST because they want it. make sure you want it too, because YOU'LL be the unhappy one and they won't be able to do anything about it. :) you don't want to regret what you did with your life. your parents had their life, you have yours. take control of it. have the courage to take risks and do what you want with your life.

as for your weight people should not go against the norm to determine if they are size is acceptable. i think most people know their natural body weight i think i think as long as your dress in a way that compliments your figure and your feel comfortable then there is no problem

i sorry to hear that you are studying something you dont like. i have been a slightly similar situation when i didnt want to study a course but was encouraged to do so because i was half way through . but i understand you when you say to respect your parent opinion no matter how you are because they mean well but sometimes they should come to a compromise.

hi! im doin 3rd yr law in a place other than my home country, and i feel i kinda in a similar situation as u. im not hating law, but i definitely dont enjoy it, it was my mum's suggestion, sometimes i feel lost about my future, i just dont believe i would survive, and feeling practice law is something so big that would never happen 2 me. also im in a similar weight and size as u, im trying to work out, but meanwhile im still happy with my body, coz its healthy! woo-hoo, so many coincidences!

I just wanna say that I am entering into 3rd year for my law degree. I don't hate it but.. I don't like it either!! It's true that my parents didn't put any pressure on me but I know that this is what they want. So basically I did it for my parents especially my father, he's a lawyer and none of my two sisters have chosen to follow this way so i kind of feel obligated.. So yeah! I did it to please my parents..

I cried watching this, because up until a few months ago I was in the same position but with Pharmacy. I'm starting Accounting and Finance in September and I am so relieved I told my parents I was unhappy doing Pharmacy. It feels like a massive weight has been lifted of my shoulder because all my life I've been all about trying to please my parents and forgot about my own happiness.

OMG Nia, I can totally relate. I was raise in the West but in a very traditional household. I got a BS in Business but I really wanted to study History/Western Civilization and was also considering law. I got married in my twenties to a kind and very hard working professional man who is also cute and everything worked out. I have no regrets and you should not have any too :) U will do great in your Journalism career and law will definitely be a good "friend" <3

This might sound wierd, but even if you hate studying law, I still think that knowing the law puts you in a really strong position. I think no matter what job you end up doing, really knowing your rights and knowing what people can and cannot do means that no-one else is going to be able to take advantage of you, particularly with stuff like employment and money. My sister studied law, and even though she's not a lawyer if I ever need any advice on legal issues, she can always help me out.

I feel like I know exactly what you mean when you say you wish people wouldn't point out your size and say they admire you,
it's the same with any prejudice - to actually get rid of it society has to do more than accept that someone is different, they have to stop realising that the person is anything but normal
Saying "I admire you for wearing suchandsuch clothes when you're a bigger girl" should sound as out of place as saying "I admire you for wearing a ponytail when you're a brunette"

I get comments on my size all the time as well. I am a short girl and I look a lot younger than what I am. I hate hearing about it too!! I am so glad that you said that. People generally dont see a massive deal in a girl being smaller; but for me it's not nice and I have to hear about it all the time. Sometimes I even avoid certain social situations when I feel that my age or younger look might become an issue.

You are so right, it's very hard to give up your dreams for your parents; mine are just like that, they put a lot of pressure on us but I believe they only want the best for us. I've always had the dream of being a ballet dancer but I had absolutely no support from my parents. It is very hard and I get what you say: the first people we want to please are our parents. I do as well enjoy your videos and I really like you. . . but I was a bit offended when you said that "Western Teens" don respect their parents or their wishes. I firmly believe that yes it's important for your parents to want to see the best in you, but idt they would want their child or children to be miserable. I love my single mother and would do anything for her, but doing something that makes me unhappy for the rest of my life is a no. I respect my mother but I what makes me happy as well.
