This particular performance is the best kapa haka vocal i have ever heard. Sometimes kapa haka singing begins to all sound the same after you've heard a few groups. Te Waka Huia are able to make a kapa haka sound that is different to the rest when they have a mix of voices and harmonies like those in this video. Absolutely goose bump material. I thank God I'm Maori.

In Alaska, we have this Sealaska Celebration that we have every two years (mostly Southeast Alaska Natives). Back in 2006, we had a Maori group visit and it was amazing. I hope another groups visits soon.

Not sure what they're saying but the 'hand motions' come with the singing in our culture. The pom pom dealies we call 'pois'... * can anyone else finish off - i wanna know too...
The hand movements are physical expressions (telling a story with our hands) for example at 3:42, they bring their arms together and bow their heads singing Sleep Well/Rest in Peace (then the name of the person they are acknowledging.
The shaking of the hands is different for everyone, butthe main consensus is our connection to nature, the leaves. the water, the wind.
This is is a modern day apakura (lament)for a revered tohunga (spirtual and technical elitist) who had recently passed away at the time. Irirangi Tiakiawa was a keeper of traditions and knowledge to do with weaponry, genealogy, and oratory some of which dated back to before the Maori came to NZ. This particular performance is the best kapa haka vocal i have ever heard. Sometimes kapa haka singing begins to all sound the same after you've heard a few groups. Te Waka Huia are able to make a kapa haka sound that is different to the rest when they have a mix of voices and harmonies like those in this video. Absolutely goose bump material. I thank God I'm Maori.

In Alaska, we have this Sealaska Celebration that we have every two years (mostly Southeast Alaska Natives). Back in 2006, we had a Maori group visit and it was amazing. I hope another groups visits soon.

The hand movements are physical expressions (telling a story with our hands) for example at 3:42, they bring their arms together and bow their heads singing Sleep Well/Rest in Peace (then the name of the person they are acknowledging.
The shaking of the hands is different for everyone, butthe main consensus is our connection to nature, the leaves. the water, the wind.

We have plenty of culture, infact Anglo Saxons are the greatest contributer to modern civilisation. Horifurrah, I think you'll find that Germany began WW1 and WW11 by invading the Baltics and Poland respectively. I find Maori's denial of their bloodthirsty, cannibalistic, heritage fascinating, it's as if they imagine resorting to personal insults and threats will make it go away. Take a leaf from the white mans book, try putting forward your case with logical argument and he may listen to you.

Pre european Maori culture revolves around violence, tribal warfare and very little else. Yes we all know about Hannibal the cannibal and there have been several other incidents, but proportionatly they are extremley isolated, whereas cannibalism was widespread and deeply ingrained in Maori culture before colonisation.
