@MrMegapimpf your blaming greeks for europes suffering? without greeks their wouldnt be democracy. im an american and while i think the greeks need to understand that entitlement based societys cant survive i think most of europe and even many in america need to realize that too.
@weasel1282 yeah his intensions were clear,if only the republicans could have seen the potential gain from.the treaty...i dread to think what hed say about us now though
Don't you as well have the feeling that all these people's efforts are in vain, since the EU - which is spearheaded by those old great powers like France, Germany, England - dictates our rules and our laws? I am from Belgium, a small country alike to Ireland, and I feel this way. They may have left our soil, but they are still very present in our parliaments and indeed our laws.
The son of Ireland... he fought the Brits and got killed by his own countrymen... how ironic... and all of that because some people just could not understand...They did not uderstand the treaty, they did not understand the Sunningdale... some of them do not understand even today.... and I would call them the traitors... Míċeál Ó Coileáin you are the Father of Ireland, you are my hero...
It sometime seems as though the only thing Irish nationalists agree on is that every other one is a traitor. Just seems that way, to judge by some "discussions." The problem w/ many an "idealist" is that they are so obsessed w/ their perfect attention to one or two ideals, they forget to attent equally to all the others as well. Seems to me, Collins had the good sense not to allow the perfect to become the enemy of the very good. He got a free Ireland where before their was none.
@deeman1992 If anyone was the traitor it was Éamon de Valera. He is the one who sent Collins cause he did not have the balls to make the tough choices himself. he is the one who say out the majority of the conflict in the states, getting rich... Michael Collins, no matter what is said about him today was a true patriot. May God keep in always!
Michael Collins, greatest ever Irishman. I've been to his home birthplace, near Sam's Cross, and the place of his assassination at mBeal na Blath. He was the brains behind the fight that brought the mighty British Empire, in Ireland, to a standstill post 1916. Long live his spirit and memory. Mo chara, dias muire diut a Micheal .
Collins death just showed what a screwed-up self serving criminal kleptocracy the IRA was, has always been, and still is. A bunch of criminals praying on their own poorest and most easily intimidated and stood over. The IRA and the Unionists are responsible for many crimes against humanity and all irish citizens, and there are lots of them today . . IRA, Sinn Fein, and Unionists leaders alike. . . who should be in jail instead of living high on the hog.

I would've sided with the "The Big Fella" for three reasons...
1. I think he did the most of the hard work both fighting the British and at least securing a semi-independent government in Ireland.
2. DeValera called for civil war; putting the country through unnecessary bloodshed which resulted in Collins' death (perhaps DeValera set Collins up to be killed).
3. Had he lived, I believed Collins could've helped settled things with the North (perhaps The Troubles wouldn't have occurred).

He wasnt a traitor but should have rejected the Treaty...and just accepted British rule as a reality until the next time it was to rise up and fight for all of Ireland.
@deeman1992 do not apologize to those who would say he was what he wasn't! darn it if the people would have used the treaty as a springboard the way he intended there would have been no bloody sunday, no internment camps, and no separation of Ireland. we would be one and free if they had bonded together and fought for the north we would not have the tensions between England, and Ireland

@deeman1992 "Now as one of the signatories of the document I naturally recommend its acceptance. I do not recommend it for more than it is. Equally I do not recommend it for less than it is. In my opinion it gives us freedom, not the ultimate freedom that all nations desire and develop to, but the freedom to achieve it." Michael Collins

@deeman1992

It was De Valera that wanted the pro and anti treaty sides to go into coalition but it was Collins that decided to call it off.
