Pointless fighting that doesn't work in real old age!
Every fighter will retire. Once you hit about 38 it's pretty much over! Fighting movements will become slow and arthritic someday. Kata however can still be practiced and remains an important tool for maintaining agile movement, quickness and freedom from pain well into old age. Plus it will make you strong as an ox!
Martial arts are ancient ways. We live in the 21st century. So if fighting is what you want then take up boxing and STFU!
Most all of the techniques work! If not, then I doubt anyone would waste time teaching them. Unfortunately, people don't use common sense. For example it is not uncommon for an Aikido practitioner to grab an opponents punch and apply a wrist lock. Trying to do that in a real fight will get your teeth knocked out. However, if one were to use other techniques that will first immobilize the opponent then a wrist lock could be safely applied! You have to know "WHEN"! But that's not being taught!
Likewise, If I successfully landed an eye gouge or even a really nice punch or any striking technique that momentarily stunned my opponent. That would be the time to enter and finish them off with (let's say) a joint lock, a throw or something. There are any number of techniques that can be used. However, if I tried to use those same techniques before my opponent's "bell was rung", it would be doubtful that any of them would be successful. Because my opponent would still be actively defending.
I used to have classes with him in the JKA hombun dojo in Tokyo back in 96... He have a great personality and he is a very dedicated teacher and amazing fighter. If you have an opportunity to have a class with him, don't miss it.
You know, Osaka sensei, Mikami sensei and Taniyama sensei are all teaching a camp in New Orleans this May. Search "JKA American Federation National Camp" to see the video invite.
