Curt definitely faded into the background by 1989. I'm really glad that they parted ways for a while, because Elemental is an important album. And then hearing his presence again in 2004 really was a fresh of breath air.
@8bittrauma There's a lot of misplaced anger in both of these songs. :( I kind of understand why music had been such a turn off for Curt after he left Tears. :(
I don't know what people are complaining about. I think this is an excellent effort by Curt. It has a great chorus. I like this song better than Roland Curt-bashing song, "Fish Out of Water".
I'm a fan of Tears for Fears, and I know Roland's work is admirable, at least. Yeah, they had their dispute, but grudges are worthless, whatever happened, is between both of them, let's just listen to the music and solve our own problems. ;-)
The song IS different from what we'd been used with TFF. They're certainly perfect together as a band, but that doesn't mean Curt was the 'cute' one and Roland the genious.Roland's voice is wonderful but none of those Chorus would've been so perfect without Curt's voice singing along. Listen to Halfway ,Pleased and you'll see what I mean. I love Roland but Curt is one unique talent, believe me. Leine
You should go listen to Roland's "Fish Out of Water," if you haven't heard it yet. For the chorus, he sarcastically sings in a Curt-style vocal to back up his own vocals. Orzabal was the main heart and mind behind the band, and while Smith added a good dimension on The Hurting album, it seems he sunk to the background with later albums (as their fame grew), and that supports Roland's critique of Curt as simply basking in the sun.
SunKing;is this a reference to Roland being a Leo,and his obsession with astrology back then?i'm not knocking astrology,it's an interesting subject but if you get caught up in predictions,it'll be difficult accepting life as it comes.
Roland did continue on without Curt. i think they would have been more successful had they stayed together. I like Curt but his talents and contributions to TFF are minimal. Roland is the glue for TFF as well as one of the most talented men on the planet. But he and Curt do sound great together and thats how people prefer it. i'm a hugr Roland fan and i think (most) everything hes done is superior!
Ya know I'm a Roland lover but I think it was only appropriate that he wrote this song...considering Roland wrote at least 2 songs lashing out at Curt.
Well "Fish out of Water" is about Curt. Then some people think "Goodnight Song" is about him too...but that song is more of a retrospective of their time together in TFF, not a "lashing out" song.
i do think that Goodnight Song is about Curt.but while Fish Out Of Water is Roland going mad at Curt for leaving,Goodnight Song seems to me that Roland was missing him, actually.I 'm pretty sure Roland wishes he could've been less of a tyrant in the studio and not reject Curt's ideas..........just my thoughts
Really?? I wouldn't think so- not that I'm going ' NO NO, you're wrong!!!' :P :P because I would never do that. That's one of the beauties of music, as with art- it's open to interpretation :) A huge number of interpretations. :D
I'm not sure.. Roland doesn't seem to dwell musically on grudges- i.e. 'Cold,' only one song about the lady. 'Shout' only one thing about his frustration and also speaking out. .. :) but that's just a thought :D
Fish out of water seems to me to be a jibe at Curt for leaving, not necessarily going mad... although he IS writing a song about it :P :P
'fish out of water' literally means a thing misplaced or not belonging.. which is what Curt was as soon as he left TFF :) 'one more martyr to the hit parade' etc. :)
It definitely was Roland's voice that distinguished TFF from other bands.

So is this a song Curt wrote?!You can always tell how strong the vocalist is when the music drowns them out.

Curt is a weak vocalist, not bad for harmonies in TFF but Roland was the real talent in TFF,with or without Curt.

ooh controversial... but possibly true. Roland + Curt = TFF.. but Curt + Roland maybe not TFF..

wow, this guy sucked without Roland. Roland is great solo or with TFF, but Curt needs TFF, and Roland. This is terrible.

Thanks. The tune reminds me a little The Power of Love from Frankie Goes to Hollywood in parts.
