  • i think the ps1 has better fps, but i havent played these games so

  • I still think this game is sooo beautiful. 2097 is also breathtaking. I might be a bit weird...

  • I'm a HUGE saturn fan but I will admit the PS1 wins by a nose on this occasion...

  • ps1 version is the better version, but the the ps1 to saturn ports were all a bit pants, i blame the developers rather than the console

  • I got the saturn version, and play it with a ss steering wheel! All of it, all the challenges, even the stupid last track with the crossovers...No shooting backwards though....

  • can you do other consols?

  • wow i accidently found ur channel and its awesome. I like ur videos

  • Do a Battle of the Ports for Wipeout 2097, then we'll really see the PS stretch its legs!!!

  • @lettucekl I did

  • @therealbluedragon wow this game still looks good on psx

  • Im trying to recall my reaction going from something like F-Zero on my SNES to this on my PSX on launch day!!!! There was such a hype about that incoming gen and was well deserved!!! Never again will we see such a jump in tech from one gen to the next....that makes me sad :(

  • @lettucekl God damn. I remember all of my friends and I pissing our pants over the first PSX commercial we saw. I must say, this is my favorite console generation.

  • Hadn't Saturn version of Wipeout one more music compared to PLaystation version as well ? It was on the plus side when this game was reviewed in ancient times ^^ I may be wrong nevertheless.

  • WipEout gameplay depends heavily on smooth framerates. Fail to deliver that and the game is pretty much broken.

  • ps1 the saturn lags

  • what abou tthe frame rate. ps1 in nice and smooth and the saturn version was not

  • looks faster on the saturn,I had the psone version back in the day

  • I think it comes down to,which copy you can find first really and if you truly want the multiplayer or not.

  • I actually played the Saturn version first, but in the end, loved both equally.

  • This was the gme that changed it all, sigh.

  • dud that just say raper class?

  • the same O_O...

  • I had compared the 2 versions side by side on my tv this is my conclusion:

    - saturn has better more "tight" controls, although they had to be hanged because of the sloppy frame rate, I'v they had left controls the same as on ps1 version, the game would be unplayable

-graphics are hands down better on ps1, the textures are more detailed and the frame rate on ps1 is werry smooth,

+saturn has sloppy frame rate but it seems to be faster than ps1

If I had to choose I would go with ps1.

  • @dawid245 Didnt the saturn version run at 60hz and the ps 50hz, that could be the reason for the saturn being faster??

  • Hi sorry if this has been asked before but what do you use for editing these videos? Thanks

  • This game was built on ps then ported to the saturn. ps is probaly slightly better but this is actully one of the good ports unlike many other lazy ones that went to saturn back then.

  • So, you've retroactively solved all Usenet/Playground arguments of 15 years ago with this series of videos... My hat's off to you!

  • @Slonie Damn, Usenet is a name I haven't heard in a long time. I must be old :(

  • @therealbluedragon Yeah, I figure most youtube commenters here would have been debating this on the schoolyard. But at least if you wanted to argue to death online, there was rec.games.something-or-other, right?

  • PS1 version wins hands down here.

  • No real problem with the Saturn version other than lack of multiplayer. Back in the day, I chose the saturn version when possible, due to the vastly better controller.

  • awesome music!!

  • Saturn 4ever

  • I played them both and personally the saturn gets the point,

  • Man I love Wipeout... too bad Sony just completely terminated Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool :(

  • Based on what I can see here, the Playstation wins.

  • Great video. I own the Saturn version. As @ABlackFalcon said, in the Saturn version, you don't come to a complete stop when you hit a wall. That's the difference maker for me.

  • The PSX version has better graphics, weapon effects particularly (should have done a race with enemies, without them you fail to show off one of the main graphical differences), but the biggest difference is CONTROLS. On Saturn you only lose a fraction of your speed when you hit a wall, while on Playstation you lose almost all of it. As a result the Saturn version is much easier and much, MUCH more fun, and really is the only one of the two worth playing. PSX Wipeout is prettier but too hard.

  • @ABlackFalcon sounds like a noteworthy difference to me.

  • @ABlackFalcon Never knew about the differences in collisions, glad that was sorted out in Wipeout 2097...oh those nice spark effect as i stripped the paint off my nice new AG-Systems billion pound ship. Now the PS version kicked the Saturns arse in wipeout 2097 without a doubt!!!

  • @lettucekl Yeah, apart from that you can use the 3d controller on the Saturn, while on Playstation Wipeout XL/2097 is only analog with the neGCon or wheel, the Saturn version of that one doesn't have any advantages I know of, that is true.

(The other major difference is that neither Saturn port supports system link multiplayer, for some reason, while the Playstation versions do. Of course, that's not something many people used I'm sure.)

  • Graphically in terms of textures, lightning, polygons, they look identical, now the framerate,

The saturn version seems to run at 20/25 fps, wile the ps1 version seems to do 30/35 fps,

The Saturn version lacks transparenci because those effects were extremy hard to be done on the Saturn,

Still, this game is a win in both version!

  • My PS1 version also has red text, so yeah it's not because of the platform.

  • that red/yellow text-thing you mentioned, it might seem illogical, but i think it had to do with the platinum version of the ps1 game coming out around the same time as the second wipeout game. so the platinum version has yellow whilst the original version has the red, and the saturn version shares the red text with the ps1 version

  • Comment removed

  • yeah the ps1 looks less choppy

  • @stealthgear

In what way? It's playing nice & smooth my end. If the video is jumping up & down inside the player then reinstall your flash plug-in. If the the video is stuttering then either restart your browser or stop using FireFox.

  • @therealbluedragon FireFox is working fine.

  • draw

  • Jesus... hard to believe these games are 15 years old - they remind me how excited I was when the consoles came out

  • PlayStation wins this round because of the higher/smoother framerate and true transparencies. I still love my Saturn version though. But I could definitely tell the difference in framerate when I first played the Saturn version. Don't get me wrong, the Saturn version still rocks!!!

  • Hey wait a minute. Is the Saturn version missing multiplayer?

  • Yep, that's maybe the biggest difference between the two

  • saturn all the wayyyy

  • @cuervorockero although saturn loses in technical aspects I choose saturn cause if you are a serious hardcore gamer you don't choose a winner by the tech specs of the console, that is for the kiddies these days. but I miss the simple and good old console wars! The days were SEGA did what NINTENDON'T and when the PLAYTHING flew off the window... hahaha :)
