The music for the whole movie is adapted from Grieg's incidental music to Ibsen's "Peer Gynt", a play, not an opera. Yes, the Dumon Network folded in 1956, this would have been on NBC, I distinctly recall seeing it when I lived in a house where we only got 1 channel which was NBC.
I really liked this show as a kid, and it holds up very well. I'm pretty sure rats can swim, though. Unless they were under a magic spell to drown themselves.
@geogray1 No, it was first shown on NBC, then it was syndicated to local station. Our local CBS affiliate, now a Fox Network affiliate, showed it annually for years.
Best part of the entire film. The piper swaying the rats to their destruction to the tune of Edvard Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King from the opera Peer Gynt.

What is the song that the Piper is playing as he lures the rats away from the town?

This is more than likely NOT a Dumont Network program. The Dumont Network ceased in 1956.

Was Peer Gynt really on opera? Because I always read that it was a play. But I don't know.
