Totally useless as you can not back anything up persay.. All you can do is extend your storage as when you connect it to a "New" DVR or upgraded one or replacement DVR it will prompt you to reformat the external drive thus loosing all your shows! Then to top it off they advertise all the "MyPhotos" with it yet there is ZERO! and I mean ZERO info on how to upload or view photos via a thumb drive, camera, external hardrive whatsoever. They sell you a idea or feature and then totally drop the ball!
I like to replace my hard drives every 5 years. How do I transfer an old 500gig wd drive with dish content to a brand new wd 2tb drive? Do I need a pc or a mac?And how exactly would I do this? I have both but would prefer to use my mac (just more stable of a system. I don't want any problems with the transfer.)
I have exactly same problem -- that installer jerk did not mention that it formats my hard drive -- What shall I do to make it recognize it on computer ?
@jignesh5 For clarification Sir, if you plug that hard drive to the computer to transfer the recordings or watch it, it wont work. it will asked you to format your hard drive. why? for the protection of the programs. all programs have copy rights. thats the rule about it. bassically, the benefit that you could get with the hard drive is that if the DVR gets busted & you have a replacement one, you can transfer the recordings from the old dvr to the new dvr.
@coldheartedkurt Well, how about creating a folder on the existing hard drive and encrypting the data ? There is no need to blindly format the hard drive ? Also, the technician comes but they don't know what they are doing.
My DVR has died twice. Failed hard drive both times in a 10 month period. They waived the $40 fee when I persisted. Backup will be nice for the next time it fails.
They make 256 gb flash drives lol. Also, good flash drives can reach up to 4 mb/s, sufficient, but not even remotely good. Oddly enough though, flash drives seem to not allow large files to be stored on them.....even if the file is well under its maximum capacity...
As long as you manage your saved shows and don't use up all the storage on the box what possible use would this be? I am all for new technology but this just mostly seems like something for the user who needs to save a huge amount of shows.
In response to what use this may be..... Lets say you upgrade your box or your hard drive on your DVR goes out. Guess what all your recordings are gone. Dish techs do not transfer your recordings to your new box. However if you have a external hard drive you never have worry about losing anything
YOU CANNOT TRANSFER YOUR SHOWS FROM THE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE TO A COMPUTER!! He also neglected to tell you that there is a $40 fee to activate the external drive and that you have to deal with 100 idiots in India to determine that it is a big waste of time!!! Just make sure your DVR is unlimited.
Note: I purchased a 750 gig acomdata hybrid external hard drive and it is not comatible. Nobody at dish seems to know this, but hybrids do not work with this feature. Bewarned! I not have to pay restocking fees to return mine. grrrrrr
also - this feature is only compatible with drives up to 750 gb in size.
i used to work for tech support for dish network and hybrid drives do not work. you will ne just a plain jane external hard drive to get it to work and if i remember correctly you can hook up a 700 gig hard drive with no problems they did a demo for us on the floor and it worked fine they used a wester digital external hard drive
my guess is that once you store the shows on the harddrive, you will only be able to watch them again if you continue to have a subscription to Dish Network...by the way, my guess is that they will eventually stop making computers and start giving us shit like this to prevent us from getting an edge on the companies...in other words, they fear piracy...
yeah, no kidding, windows xp and it's registry bs was a step towards what you're saying. Save your old computers, save all your old software. It'll be worth alot someday I guarantee it. People collect stupid crap like baseball cards, computer software will be wayyy more collectible someday.
3. Will be delayed and or never released...as have been so many hinted/suggested features on previous equipment starting with the 721's USB. (Former Echostar Employee)
This feature seemed to have a lot of potential, I'm disappointed to see how people say it doesn't work nearly as well we would have liked on here.

can u use a Flash Drive ? i tried it and it said Feature not sopported? why?
sspeedy43 2 years ago 4
Because they don't have fast enough read/write speeds, plus the HDD has to be 50GB minimum.

DishNetwork recommends the use of the VIP722 DVR rcvr with External Hard Drives up to 300 gb...for the moment.

That's nice, but WHERE IS IT? We're waiting...
My guess is it will either be:
1. A Subscription/Premium Service.
2. Require a Proprietary Echostar Drive.
3. Will be delayed and or never released...as have been so many hinted/suggested features on previous equipment starting with the 721's USB. (Former Echostar Employee)
