was well spoken. however in his attempt to come across confident, there are touches of arrogance.
that said, you need to take into account his audience and purpose of the speech. its celebrating their graduation. its allowed to come across over the top to youtube viewers who werent there.
you only need to look at the response he got to know it was effective. kudos to him!
1. being an intellectual is also being able to tolerate other points of view
2. but part of being an intellectual is the understanding that it may be very important to someone else...
Points 1 and 2 are the same thing. So you responded to me by saying exactly what I said. I was telling you to tolerate someone else's point of view...was I not?
I just don't understand how you can step out side of your own view points and step inside of him and at least try to understand why he might be excited. I do believe he has that right. Do you know his family history, maybe he's the first one to graduate...you just have to take things into consideration before making rash judgments. It's called critical thinking. I am not being an asshole or intolerant...just creating a little insight.
Oh he has the right. I'm going to be the first in my family to graduate too. It may be exciting for him, but IN MY OPINION (how much can I stress this) I don't think it's a big deal.
I am just questioning you, it's evident you don't like to be questioned because it means you have to think about what you say. The only defense you have about is about tolerating view points.....that's unfounded and without merit as you can't prove I am not tolerating your view points. I am just questioning them out of intellectual curiosity...the only intolerant person is you for not understanding this mans excitement. My original point from the very beginning.
Actually, I don't understand why you have to make a big deal about it on a YouTube video comments board. It's a video, I commented on it, I gave my opinion. Period.
Actually, it was an intellectual discussion. I just like to question out of intellectual curoisity. I extract logic from comments that clearly lack it. Period.
haha if that's what makes you feel good about yourself, then I would imagine that you are the one with a sorry life. Including insulting superior, college graduate, speeches... ;)
If thats what you call it. You just can't take criticism from a different intellect. The main point is that you failed to step in to someone else's shoes during his graduation speech, made a thoughtless comment, and you fail to admit it. It amuses me how long you're holding out. Although at 20 we're all a little arrogant with no validation.
Actually, you can. It's called being human. I am so sorry that I am not up to your 'intelligence.' I guess I am also sorry for sticking to my opinions and not turning tail when confronted by someone who needs to feed their immense ego.
So now I'm egotistical for holding my own viewpoint? Egotistical for questioning your view point? Look who's getting defensive when I, myself, don't "turn tail". You, have held out defensively, on a scant, judgmental opinion of a graduation speech. The fact that you cannot admit it would fall under egotistical to say the least. Since we're 7 or 8 days into this discussion...if I'm feeding my ego, then you're feeding out of the same dish...
Wow, excessive stereotyping going on in the preceeding 2 comments! I just don't understand why we fall back on outdated notions of "race" to categorise each other... there is no "black race," no "white race," and no "jewish race," there is only the human race.
Btw really inspiring speech, I really liked it! I'm valedictorian at my school this year, hope I'll be as inspiring as you were!
