I've just found your channel, excellent work,im not a total novice player but i'm having a little trouble following some of the instructions (im slow ,your a little fast) regarding heatrtbeat ,would it be possible for you to post the tabs for the chords used in the part starting at 2:30 in the video "a" to "d" to "e" including the strum pattern (ie which strings ) cant figure it out
really accurate and you come across a a nice guy too. Learning this for a wedding band i am in, and thats sorted me out brilliant. Keep up the good work!
@princetyrion2010 Hi and greetings from Australia. This song has always been very popular in my live sets - it is one of those ageless songs really worth knowing when you are gigging. Hope the wedding show goes well. Cheers. Ric T
Great tutorial. Couple questions. You said the chards are A, D and 7th. What Chord is 7th?
Also what chord are you basing it off on the 12th & 14th frets? I know it sounds correct but just curious how you found that and knew to use just the top two strings.
one comment though, I notice when you finger the 'riff' parts you seem to be forming more or less a full chord and then hitting just the couple of strings that comprise the riff. This can make it hard to see which strings you are actually playing even if it is a more natural way for you to play it.
wow thanks ric your lessons are ace i am learning so many songs thanks to you dont ever give up teaching us people we need people like you who give so much time and effort so we can enjoy our guitars thanks mate
Hi Ric. Really, really good lesson. Now all I've got to do is learn those chord triads! Any chance of doing a tujtorial on Buddy's 'Tell Me How'? Thanks, Kevin
Hiya. You really nailed the tone on that as well as playing it dead-on. I've been playing Buddy's tunes for 35 years and always figured he used really heavy guage strings. Just out of curiosity how heavy are the ones on that sweet tele you've got there? Thanks
The fifties rocker who was renowned for putting heavy strings on his guitar was Carl Perkins. A lot of the country artists did this because their outfit did not include a drummer, and by hammering on thick low strings they could get a percussive sound. As for Buddy, I don't know, but we could ask Tommy Allsup who was the guitarist on the session - and is still with us. As for me, I use 9-42 on the Tele. I find that the Bigsbys work well with lighter gauge strings.
You sing pretty well also. You should do a complete singing version of the song! I think Tommy Alsup played lead on the original 'Heartbeat' by Holly. He was an Oklahoman that later opend a studio in
Odessa, Tx. I have some songs up on uk-tube also: Robin Brown / West Texas rockabilly
Thank you - I notice that you are a fan of Jay Hawkins who I met in 1988 when he toured Australia. A really nice and very intelligent fellow. Had the pleasure of having a drink and a chat with Jay after his show. Love "Feast of the Mau Mau!"
wow amazing ric love your lessons..and uve shown me the only reason worth using a tremlo on..normally they just put me out of tune and i dislike them..essentially why i bought a telle recently..u dont see many trem
telles..but your bigsby sounds like its werking very well..keep up the good werk..ill be following you lessons..
Personally I think that the tremolo adds a lot of expression to the sound. I guess having said that, many of the great guitarists have made their living without them - the great James Burton with his factory spec tele for one. Keep the good times rolling!
Thanx a lot for this lesson!!!! Really great, although it's sometimes a little bit fast (i had troubles with the bridge..) but after 1 hour stoppin' and playin' i think i've got it! It's better when it's slower i think...
Please do post more of that lessons, buddy holly was so ahead of his time!
For some reason whenever I heard this song,it always reminded me of a hawaiian song. So in essence I would have this picture in my mind of Buddy performing at a luau wearing a grass skirt and no shoes with a tropical flower in his ear, bare chested and playing a ukelele.
Calypso and latin beats were very poular in mainstream pop in the late fifties - this was helped a lot by the popularity of Harry Belafonte. In 1957 The Diamonds scored a huge hit with the rhumba rhythm of "Little Darlin'"
Pat Boone also hit with "Speedy Gonzalez" a couple of years later. Hope to post a couple of songs by The Fleetwoods soon - a great group from the fifties.
Thank you very much - this is one of my favourite Holly songs - I am looking for some of his more obscure and less covered songs to do lessons for - hopefully something will be up soon
Great lesson----except it would be so much better if we could see you playing the whole song without the pictures of Buddy Holly---kind of spoils the point.
Enjoyed lesson, nice level of detail though I had to revisit the bridge several times. I didn't care that much for BH until I watched this vid and you may have spun off another fan. Great post so keep 'em coming. - Sam
Thanks for the kind words. Keep rockin' and let the good times roll!

So....5th fret A barred 10th fret D barred 12th fret E barred. And also your hammering the small finger--- This is how i see it.
