A powerful testimony to not only the stupidity of man, but also his redemption. No matter how many times i see this it cuts deep into my being, makes me teary eyed, sad and angry.
I hope the new generations learn from our past and can avoid the senseless inhumanity of war. Unfortunately, i am seeing the opposite all around me. Reminds me of the old saying: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". Lest we forget...
The only "bad" soldiers in europe during WW2 were the SS, the other german soldiers were doing their job and duty, just like all the english and american soldiers did.
@Hugebull but there is a diference between the SS soldiers and SS guards(or what every you want to call them) . And no mather what SS they where they were following orders, from SS commander and they were following the customs of the time
@Charagrin I fail to see how you can compare what the Nazi's did to the USA today? Please fill me in. Are there train loads of people heading off to death camps I haven't heard about?
@timeallows It's not the thought, It's the actions. We are currently on the same exact path that Nazi Germany was 70 year's ago. it starts small and builds up. look at how the world as a whole views us as a country. Forcing our will on smaller countries, or supplying a countries revolution with the plan that they will in turn favor us in trade. Our methods are different, but the end will be the same. I am not going to argue it with you if you disagree, Time will tell whose right.
@Charagrin You see us as the same as Nazi Germany was 70 years ago? 1941? You should realize how extremely lucky you are to have been born in the USA in the post war years.
@Charagrin Would one be considered stupid if they deny the facts? Fighting for your country in a defensive way or on behalf of an allie under attack-such as England was, does not equate to Blitzkrieg.
@timeallows So by that logic an American soldier in Iraq is there for the oil? It's logical progression. just because a German soldier fought against the Allies on foreign soil does not mean he was a sympathizer. It doesn't mean he was anything. He could have just been a lad with no other options except to fight or starve, or maybe he would rather his country write it's own history good or bad rather then have us write it for them.
@Charagrin "a German soldier fought against the Allies on foreign soil " was at best a victim of his own countrymen-nothing for a USA solider to try to understand or explain.
@timeallows Could say the same about our soldiers. Whoever wins simply declares that every other soldier was bad. The Germans were just as equal as our soldiers, just following orders. If the Germans won then we would be classed as the 'bad guys' in the war. History is written by the conquerors.
@timeallows Okay, that's fine, it's your opinion. But please remember what you read in the text-books isn't entirely correct. We only have 50% of the image.
@Skillerguy45 Sure but my Grandfather and his brother and cousins had alot to say about what they experienced over there.Horrifying.Fuck those Fascist bastards.Any American who promotes Nazi ideology is the lowest sort of scum to me.An insult to all those who suffered and died in a war we did not want a part of in the first place.
@Skillerguy45 Yes that might be so. What was it the German citizens were saying as their Jewish neighbors were firebombed, beaten, arrested, ghettoized and dragged off to death camps? What were the German people saying as the Luftwaffe launched air attacks against Kraków, Łódź, and Warsaw in Poloand 1939?
Film footage shows them in the streets celebrating-not protesting their governments aggression. They followed that bastard Hitler all the way to the end and got exactly what they deserved.
@timeallows Sure they did. But remember, much hides behind lies and empty-promises. The Germans did terrible things in the war, but I think you're being a bit stereotypical. Many were against Hitler and hid regime.
@Hugebull If my neighbor was persecuted and stripped of their employment, business, property and rights then methodically rounded up by armed German soldiers-So where did they imagine all the Jews went to?
how clever it was... and u see that its proof German Solders was just Humans like u and me... stop ruing us for this indeed evil evil evil age in your history... we will never forget it but the word is ready to forgive us! step over the shadow and took the hand we give u world!
There are no enemies, only confused and distorted humans doing the best we can with what we know with where we are. Music, like art, connects us to our core.
Lili Marlene lyrics, part 2: Orders came for sailing, somewhere over there. All confined to barracks was more than I could bear. I knew you'd be waiting in the street, I heard your feet, but could not meet My Lili of the lamplight, my own Lili Marlene. Resting in a billet, just behind the line, Even though we're parted, your lips are close to mine. You wait where the lantern softly gleams. You sweet face seems to haunt my dreams. My Lili of the lamplight, my own Lili Marlene.
Lili Marlene lyrics, part 1: Underneath the lantern, by the barrack gate, Darling I remember the way you used to wait. 'Twas there that you whispered tenderly That you loved me, you'd always be My Lili of the lamplight, my own Lili Marlene. Time would come for roll call, time for us to part, Darling, I'd caress you and press you to my heart. And there neath that far-off lantern light, I'd hold you tight, we'd kiss good night, My Lili of the lamplight, my own Lili Marlene.
This story is really touching. It is just by listening the stories of the old veterans of the WW2 that we can catch the true meaning of the war.In E.M Remarque's books you can find the same emotions described by who truly fought the war on the battlefields, not who declared it from behind a desk!
This story shows why patriotism is so dangerous... Patriotism is the process of putting country before logic love and common sense - It's how governments convince regular old humans into killing each other - when they might as well have been friends
Sad... we all want the same thing and we all have the same feelings
@andrewmward1 Tell that to the Poles and the French. They had your same views of just how dangerous patriotism is. Without it, we would have been beaten. You haven't learned a thing from the past.
@andrewmward1 There is nothing wrong with Patriotism. Some international conflicts can be solved peacefully, others can't. I'm guessing you aren't friends with any Nazis or radical Muslims are you?
This story show why patriotism is so dangerous... Patriotism is the process of putting country before logic love and common sense - It's how governments convince regular old humans into killing each other - when they might as well have been friends

A beautiful and one of the most universal sings in german. Soldiers on all fronts would listen to during cold nights and warm summerdays.. "Lili Marleen" is the title, originally known as "The Girl under the Lantern".
The song was written in 1915 during World War I by Hans Leip (who survived the war), a school teacher from Hamburg who had been conscripted into the Imperial German Army.
That reminds me of another story: In WWI were english and germans caught in a trenchfight, as x-mas arrived, the weapons were silent... In the night both heard the same melody out of the other trench "silent night" (just with different lyrics on each side) and they got out of their trenches and celebrated x-mas together. And the next day, the shooting started again, because it had to, even though they were friends by now... Sad world...
was this a song at the time? or did he just make up the song for the german sniper out there as he played? If it was a popular tune at the time or something, what is the name of that song? anybody know?
yea i know what its like to be scared and alone in a hostile area and able to make a few friends with music, brought me back to the few locals I made friends with in afghanistan
This is not a story about the justness of war, why the war happened, or which side was in the right... this is a story about the emotional potency of music. In fact, the man in this video goes on to say that the German was NOT his enemy; he was just as afraid, confused, and lonely as he was.
It sickens me that you would use a sweet, moving, real story like this -one of the few on Youtube- to spew your negativity. This video is not the place for it. Grow up.
I agree totally, this is just like this situation during the first world war when on december 24th french, british and german soldiers celebrated christmas together. Despite this being down to emotions evoked by music. I think what these two events have in common is the deep longing for peace.

@IIJG27Rich im pretty sure if you were a "German Sniper" in WW2, you were most likely part of a the nazi army. of course theres a difference between being a nazi and being part of the nazi army.
@bbqprozac A German was not allowed to belong to any political party. If it was a Waffen SS soldier yes he could, but a simple Wehrmacht soldier could not. Not too many people know this though.
They should have based The Most Interesting Man in the World off of this guy. "I once played a song during a battle. The enemy surrendered."
