I saw PiL perform this live twice when Keith Levene was still in the band...it was a far more electric and powerful rendering of the song than this anemic, "slick," bland studio musicians-as-backing-band version. I know Lydon's got to make a living, and more power to him, but any relevance he might have had as an innovative musician vanished once he and Levene split. I saw PiL a third time, with the hired musicians backing band, and they were very professional...and completely forgettable.

@robert101455 are you listening? That is Levene on the recording. The hired band isn't playing in this video; they're miming to the original studio version, used for the single. Lydon re-recorded the song for the album version with different players, who may or may not be these guys.

@ccyt It doesn't sound like Levene to me, but I won't claim this isn't him, because I don't know. I have a bootleg record of the follow up material PiL were working on before Levene parted ways with the band, a record that Levene himself was selling to indie record stores in NYC at the time--(I saw him bringing up a box of the records himself to one store on 8th Street)--and I don't remember it sounding like this, (I haven't listened to it in 25 years, probably). I'll check it and see.

This was a Dutch eighties show called Countdown and the prick asking Lydon a stupid question is Erik de Zwart who I will always remember for his painful interviews with people like Robert Smith and Mark Hollies. If I remember correctly both singers just stared at him and didn't give any answer at all.

Yep it's dutch TV. It was broadcast on the public tv channel Veronica in the early eighties. The interviewe (Erik de Zwart) is first told that his cameraman sucks and then when he tries to ask a funny question Johnny walks off...
