Obviously, the characters never get involved in a sexual or romantic relationship, how the hell would a book like that have sold in the 19th century? But Sherlock and Watson share such a deep, affectionate bond that it's difficult not to wonder if there's something more going on internally. And plenty of gay men marry women, whether to hide their homosexuality or for other reasons.

In all honesty, I can't see how they would get that to work by now. They've dotted various homages to the other stories throughout both series in a kind of 'blink and you miss it' fashion, but something as significant as Watson marrying would have needed seeds planted already and they simply haven't touched it. That and in the original Watson was married when Holmes supposedly died and Mary then died herself at some point during the 3 years it took for Holmes to return
